RSVP? Democrats are split on snubbing or showing up for Donald Trump’s inauguration

… for Democrats and their allies, Jan. 20, 2025 is a dreaded date coming off a bruising 2024 presidential election. And they’re not sure about attending the time-honored transfer of power in person.

“I’m not quite sure what I would be celebrating with his inauguration,” Rep. Jamie Raskin, a Maryland Democrat who spearheaded some of the aggressive oversight during Trump’s first term...

For Democrats who agree with Raskin, no amount of calls for returning to normalcy will persuade them to attend Trump’s swearing-in ceremony.

They are making it a point to skip Trump’s second inauguration for events that will underscore their values, such as celebrations around the holiday for slain civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., which falls on the same Monday.

“I won’t pretend to normalize who or what he stands for,” Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, said of Trump in an interview.

Notably, however, are Democrats from the swing states Trump swept in November, who emphasized keeping with traditions, namely showcasing the country’s peaceful transfer of power.

“I’ll be in attendance,” said Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., who could face one of the toughest 2026 Senate battles. “And I think Georgians expect me to be.”

Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., said he will also be at the January event, and that his attendance was never in question. “I think it’s a responsibility,” said the former astronaut and finalist to be Kamala Harris’ 2024 vice-presidential running mate.

“That’s a good question,” Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., said when asked if he would be there come January. “I haven’t thought about it.”

The offices for former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama said there were no scheduling announcements for either at the moment. Former President Bill Clinton’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

I have a modest proposal.

The Master Drone (Italian: Il Pa-Drone), popularly referred to as God Emperor Trump, was a 65-foot (20-metre) papier-mâché sculpture and float depicting Donald Trump, the president of the United States at the time, dressed as the fictional God Emperor of Mankind from the Warhammer 40,000 miniature war game franchise. It was created by the Italian artist Fabrizio Galli for the Carnival of Viareggio in 2019.

When the float had its moment, it was supposed to mock Trump. The soundtrack for the float was a song Carolus Rex by hard rock/military history-focused band Sabaton.

It backfired….people loved it, and it became co-opted by Trump supporters.

Here’s the proposal: go to any rally or event held by a boycotting Dem, bring a smaller replica of the float, and crank Carolus Rex from a boom box in the audience.

I certainly have been reading a number of articles that reference Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, lately. I do hope she is not becoming ever more influential in the democrat party. She seems to be so far left as to be anti-American.

Can’t find a single animated gif of it anymore. I had two bookmarked and they’re gone from their servers. Did a search and found numerous still pics but if I add “gif” to the search there is zip. Not even the stills.

That animatronic sculpture/float was outstanding, and great choice of music.

Any idea what happened to it? It was built and presented in 2019 so if it was stored somewhere it's probably got some dust on it by now. I would love to see it pulled out of storage and used again.
