Shiitake-derived functional food shows suppression of liver fibrosis progression
Medical Xpress / Osaka Metropolitan Univ / American Journal of Physiology-Gastrointestinal and Liver ^ | Dec. 19, 2024 | Hayato Urushima et al

Chronic liver damage can lead to hepatitis, which causes fibrosis of the liver. This buildup of collagen and other fibrous tissue accelerates when hepatic stellate cells become activated during hepatitis, often resulting in liver cancer or cirrhosis, both of which can be fatal. As there are no effective drugs to treat cirrhosis, suppressing the activation of the stellate cells is considered as a way of controlling the progression of liver fibrosis.

"It is estimated that one out of every three to four people worldwide have steatotic liver disease, when there is an abnormal accumulation of lipids, which is a precursor to fibrosis. So, it is important to prevent the progression of liver fibrosis at an early stage," explained Dr. Hayato Urushima, an Associate Professor of the Graduate School of Medicine at Osaka Metropolitan University.

His research team investigated how AHCC (Amino Up Co., Ltd., Sapporo, Japan), a standardized extract of cultured Lentinula edodes mycelia, protects the liver and its mechanism.

The team administered AHCC to mice and found that the supplement might inhibit the activation of hepatic stellate cells through two channels.

Via the TLR2 (toll-like receptor protein) channel, AHCC induced cytoglobin that decreased reactive oxygen species, while via the TLR4 channel, the supplement suppressed the expression of collagen in the liver of the mice.

The AHCC supplement is available from health food stores and places like Amazon.

Shiitake mushrooms may be available from your local store.

It appears to help prevent liver fibrosis via two actions it provides.

When my husband was diagnosed with liver cancer and given three months to live (he refused chemo, which we were told would give him an extra very miserable month) - I did a lot of research and “mushroom extracts” kept coming up - I ended up giving him several supplements made from mushrooms - Chaga, Lion’s Mane, Maitake. His scans showed the tumors shrinking.

He ended up living four years, confounding his doctors.

And they are delicious cooked on the grill. A little sea salt pepper olive oil and basalmic vinegar.

Shiitakes are one of the easier mushrooms to grow, much easier than “buttons” (which turn into criminis, which turn into portobellos), despite buttons being cheaper and more widely available.

Thanks! They sell shitake mushrooms at Trader Joes. I also buy them Dehydrated from the local Oriental Food store and use them in my Ramen soup. The stems are very woody so do not use them for cooking. You can use dried stems for making stock.

Bon, thanks for sharing that information about the mushrooms!

I have heard that ginger and button mushrooms are useful in treating prostate cancer, which is good, since I use them both anyway.

I noticed that prices have skyrocketed over the past couple of years - I used to buy a foil pouch of different types of mushroom powders from a company called OM - for ≈ $17. Now those same foils pouches are $27.

I think because mushrooms have exploded in popularity.

Amazon had the best price on Chaga, apparently the most anti-cancer of all the mushrooms, I switched to Chaga completely.

All I know is that it seemed to work for us - until my husband decided to take some type of Chinese medicine his cousin gave him (which I didn’t know about at the time) - we believe that stimulated his cancer back into action, it exploded - killed him within months.

Sorry Johnny come lately to the conversation.

I’ve had great health with the coriolus versicolor mushroom.
Even gave to my 10 year old cat - no more blood in her eye
nor in her urine. I took it as a preventitive measure, did same with ivermectin but prefer the mushrooms.

I have noticed the same price increases in dried shiitake, it is, unfortunately, mostly from China. Due to industrial pollution I really prefer not to buy grown products from China or India.

Bon I hope you have a Merry Christmas! Its 10:45 on Christmas Eve and I am wrapping it up for the night. (Listening to on line Midnight service.)

Merry Christmas. I am listening to “Hallelujah Chorus” by the Boston Pops Orchestra! Highly recommend - also “Christmas Canon 2003” by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

Family is late arriving - so we’ll go to the latest service possible.

Merry Christmas to you and Your Loved Ones!

The Chaga I got for my husband is from Canada. I too am wary of anything coming from China!
