California man mauled to death by his own 3 dogs in front of horrified onlookers at playground: ‘Like XL bullies, just massive muscle’

A California man was mauled to death by his own dogs on a San Diego playground Friday when the three beasts refused to let off their owner despite bystanders’ desperate efforts.

Calls started coming into San Diego police around noon Friday reporting a dog attack at the Mesa Viking Neighborhood Park, and when police arrived they found three “XL bullies” sinking their teeth into the defenseless man, according to KTLA.

The attack was so vicious one witness thought police were trying to apprehend a violent criminal.

“I just saw they had something trapped in the weeds over here. I thought it was a person at first because they were talking about setting up a perimeter,” said park neighbor Steve Marto.

“They were big, like XL bullies, just massive muscle,” he said.

As the dogs kept attacking, bystanders tried to help by whacking the canines with shovels and a golf club.

Eventually, the cops were forced to shoot the animals with tasers. Two of the dogs were subdued and caught, but a third escaped into the surrounding neighborhood.

That prompted the nearby Ericson Elementary School to go into lockdown until the animal was found back at its home and captured.

“The officer was able to break up the dogs. They fled, and the injured male was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries,” police said.

When I was a kid, I didn’t like Dobermans, and to my eye, Rottweilers were simply Dobermans that had been mutated into something perhaps less swift and agile than a Doberman, but far heavier and more lethal.

As I got older and encountered as friends people who owned both Dobermans and Rottweilers, I realized that they could be just as personable and gentle as any other dog, but when provoked, turned into an aggressive, protective animal with great strength and speed, combined with strong jaws and large, white teeth.

But when I was a kid, I thought they were all out to get me personally!

PUCK the feople that let their demon dogs run loose! My physical therapist told me to start walking but I can’t even walk my own da** neighborhood because we’ve caught one of those loose pits twice driving in the car there’s no way I’m going to be vulnerable to one on foot. It affects our quality of life and I wish I could sue for it.

Hear ya. A carry dog could be the solution, like the Charter Arms Bulldog .44 Spl. Only around 20 ozs.

That is typical PACK mentality.
One dog starts barking. Then they all start barking.

I see it with our beagles and chihuahuas.

I think it is interesting that the author of the article called them “three “XL bullies”.
Meaning these are NOT Bull Dogs or English Bull Dogs. These were American Staffordshire Bull Terriers. Also know as PIT BULLS.

As we all know Pit Bulls are the preferred dogs of people inn the hood. Pit Bulls are by far the breed that is responsible for human deaths. Roughly 30x more than the next breeds Rotweillers and German Shepards.

The problem is that Pit Bulls are also the breed or mixed breed that is predominately SOLD/Adopted by your local human society branch. They will bring in these dogs from various places in the US and Central America. Then they will SELL/ADOPT to people all over the USA.

When they fill out the required state registration they always list the breed as a “lab mix”. This is because they know that adopting/buying a PIT Bull puppy will void your HOME OWNERS Insurance policy with several carriers.

By supporting/donating to your local shelters this is what you are supporting.

There are only four things you need to know to understand them fully...they are fixated on food. They exist only for affection. They will eat or roll in the most disgusting of things ranging from a pile of shit from any animal, to a dead raccoon on the side of the road.

That describes 'em so well

I knew one that would eat socks! and then the owner would have a tough time cutting it out when it came out the other end!!

That’s a failure by the owner to allow those little dogs to do that. THE dogs are the leaders at that house, not the owner.

I’ve never heard of that one. I’ll have to check it out, thanks! Then I just have to grow eyes in the back of my head lol! Seriously though I have had bad dreams about being chased by large loose canines since I was a kid. It stems from spending the weekend a few times a year at my grandparents house where they would keep their vicious dogs in the dark basement while we kids were there and their barking coming from that scary place seemed ominous.

It remains unclear what the dogs’ fate will be.

Old school rural thinking is you put it down because you can never trust it again.

Well said, and accurate.

Well, except when it isn’t. The overwhelming majority of dogs will never be any problem. And yes, owners are responsible for bad behavior. That doesn’t alter the fact that the nature and size of some breeds cause them to be inherently dangerous.

No one questions why border collies herd children without being taught. That is what they have been selectively bred to do. Do you expect the average Lhasa Apso to be on alert with visitors the way a guard breed would?

I have been around Staffordshires and Pitties that were among the sweetest dogs I have met. That doesn’t alter the truth of the analogy.

Enjoy your grapes.

I remember seeing my first Rottweiler in the mid 70s when the Omen was on HBO. I thought it was the most beautiful dog I’d ever seen.
Now, I know for a fact I’d seen a Rottie before in the episode The Devil’s Advocate from Kolchak the Night Stalker — but hadn’t remembered it. But the dog in the omen just took my breath away. The black and brown — just a beautiful color combo.
My Dad adored Rotties as far back as his time in WW2. He befriended one at an inn in Southern Germany. Maxi the Rottweiler was about the size of a small bear, and was a big playful goof.

My girl, Ursa, who I had between 2002 - 2011, was my best friend and protector. She also adored my daughter — and was her court jester and personal security detail. She was a good dog and a total goof ball. If I can find the photo of her in her gold Elvis glasses, I’ll post it if I can. She had style. She also was raised by my Dad’s golden retriever — so she had a lot of his goofy, sweet natured traits.

I seem to specialize in torties. I’ve had 5 over the years. I currently have a dilute tortie and a Russian Blue.

Yes...it was a nice discovery on my part to spend extended time with Rottweilers and realize that they could be just as friendly as other breeds!

The dog by which I measure all dogs was my Rottweiler, Ursa. I didn’t pick her that day, rather — she walked right up to me (all three lbs of her) and climbed into my lap.
Ironically, I was at the breeder with my brother helping HIM pick out a dog. I insisted he get Ursa (the name I gave her) and he did. He later gave her to me.
She was trained, raised with love, and socialized with dogs and small animals. She became a therapy dog who was beloved at my Dad’s nursing home.
She also fought a bear and one. But it scared the heck out of her at the time.
I’ve owned a Doberman, a Carolina Dog and a Treeing Walker Coonhound in the years since I had Ursa.
The only one to bite me was the Walker Hound, but in his defense, at the time he nipped my hand, he was dying of cancer and in a lot of pain. I miss him terribly, even though he was a terrible fit for our family.
The only dogs that really freak me out are the tiny purse dogs who are rarely trained. (but when they are, they’re adorable.)

Absolutely true.
You CAN NOT ignore the last several hundred(or thousands) years of breeder selection.

Canine breeds like Pit Bulls have been bred to get the most muscular dog with the strongest bite. The purpose of this breed is to fight a male bovine in a ring known as a pit.
Then people started fighting the dogs against each other.
The weaker puppies were either killed or fed to the stronger dogs.

At this point there is NO breeding this out of the dog. Therefore, they can never be trusted. No different than a wolf or any of the wolf/dog hybrids.

Chihuahuas and Dachshunds are also viscous breeds. Dachhounds are actually responsible for more dog bites as a percentage than any other breed.
This is because this hound breed was bred to go down in a burrow and KILL A BADGER.
However, IF one of these breeds bites you they are probably not going to kill you. Unless you fall down on the kitchen floor and they bite you in the jugular.

All canine breeds over 75 pounds have the ability to hurt a person. Even Labrador and Golden Retrievers. Generally it is NOT in their nature. This is because they were not bred as a protection dog. They were bred to jump off the boat and retrieve the net or bird.

There are on RARE occasions bad retrievers. That are viscous. Pitt Bulls were bred to fight and kill. It is in their nature. Owning one is like owning a time bomb that you never know when it is going to go off.

My doxie is a mini black and tan. 2 years old. She drapes her neck over mine in the morning with lots of warm kisses to follow. Her older sister is a Rat Terrier who adores tummy rubs. Mornings are nice.

Hahaha...my dog had an absolute fixation with athletic socks, and the less-washed, the better! (and that was at a time where I was using a large number of athletic socks!)

I remember I was washing clothes and she picked up a few socks...amused, I gave her another. And another. Pretty soon, she must have had a dozen socks in her mouth, sticking out at every angle, and the happiest look on her face!

They sure like picking things up with their mouths...we were decorating the Christmas tree one time, and one of the large, old fashioned glass ornaments fell onto the carpet, and she picked it up in her mouth!

In a panic, seeing a huge Veterinary bill in my future, I cooed at her to stay still and tried gently to get her to relinquish it without smashing it into small shards.

Another time, my mom gave her a raw egg, and she proudly paraded around with it in her mouth!

Funny. They are so good natured, but there are outliers. Some years ago, I was walking in between a row of cars in a parking lot, and as I passed a car, there was an older Golden looking balefully as I passed by in the narrow space. Just as I passed and the instant I saw it and thought “Ah! A lovely Golden!” the dog lunged at me, teeth bared in a hostile grimace, incisors showing prominently.

I have to tell you...that nearly made me crap myself, it was so close and unexpected, and it also provoked an unsolicited anger in me that was so foreign to any Goldens I had ever seen!

Mine was never like that. My dog loved to go out in the yard and start conversing with neighborhood dogs on the other side of the fence.

The thing about doxies is that the kids love them. The odd shape and small size make them seem non-threatening, and all the little kids want to come over and pet him. Fortunately, he's very good with kids.
