Healing the gut may be the key to improving long-term recovery in stroke patients, scientists have found.
The team demonstrated how a drug that was effective at protecting the brain in the immediate aftermath of a stroke failed to prevent long-term cognitive impairment when applied only to the brain. The same drug, when applied to the gut, reduced impairment significantly.
What happens in the gut after a stroke?
Within mere moments of a stroke, patients experience a cascade of symptoms, many of which are immediately apparent, Sohrabji said.
Less apparent, is the damage being done to key structures in the intestine, as the brain communicates to the gut that something is wrong. "What we've found is that minutes after a stroke occurs, normal gut anatomy is completely disrupted," Sohrabji explained.
Most notably, cells responsible for keeping the contents of the gut sealed off from the rest of the body begin to erode, allowing digestive bacteria to leak out and cause harm to other bodily systems. Under certain conditions, Sohrabji said, these bacteria can end up in the brain itself and disrupt its functioning.
Even if bacteria don't make it all the way to the brain, brain function can still be impaired as the body's immune system recognizes the threat and mounts an inflammatory response to fight it. Increased inflammation exacerbates the impact of a stroke, further injuring the brain and increasing long-term cognitive impairment.
In the study, a treatment applied directly to the gut—a dose of Insulin-like Growth Factor or IGF-1—was shown to significantly reduce post-stroke inflammation and cognitive impairment. Sohrabji and her team's investigation showed that the structures in the gut that become damaged after a stroke appeared to be repaired by the IGF-1 treatment, reinforcing the idea that healing the gut is crucial in facilitating stroke recovery.

so much to learn about healing the gut... I have gastric issues.
I had a cerebral hemorrhage and massive stroke caused by the Covid booster shot my GI is one thing that works well as does my cognitive ability I eat lots of fresh vegetables and fruit chia seeds and other nuts also take probiotics and Lions Mane also keep a daily bathroom schedule and drink plenty of water I do struggle physically but working on that be mindful of diet lots of salmon and small amounts of red meat

How do you research what happens within minutes of a stroke occurring?

Good point. It isn’t as if someone is following people around hoping for a stroke.
Hello all, PRAYERS AND ANY MEDICAL INFORMATION NEEDED!
My DIL, a healthy 50yo, got a fever 3 days ago, earache and headache. My son took her to ER, they took a swab, told her she didn’t have Covid and there was stuff going around and to go home and take Motrin.
Next Dat she was feeling worse, so he took her to urgent care and they took blood for lab work. Yesterday morning the doctor called and said he to ER immediately as her kidneys weren’t functioning.
They admitted her, her spleen was swollen 50%, now this morning her liver is shutting down, her kidneys are at 50% and she’s in ICU. She’s red and eyes yellow. They don’t know what’s causing this.
I appreciate all prayers, for her and my son.
Correction, her kidneys are at 10%.
Her dad and sister are flying in, and I told my son to call her pastor to come visit and pray for her if he can.
If a Healthy Gut PAC ever springs up to buy back US Senators, we might see dramatic progress. :)
Oh, Rusty … I’m so sorry, and, shocked to hear this about your dear DIL.
Will definitely be keeping her in steadfast prayer, for complete healing.
Please keep us posted.
If I find any related info, as to possible cause (for her kidneys/organs to be shutting down), I will ping you.
Prayers for your daughter in law and son. May God protect her health and give strength and comfort to your family.
Thank you. All prayer help! I guess I s/h posted on prayer thread.
I did a little research, read just an untreated infection can cause. My son said her doctor wasn’t happy that the ER did nothing but check for COVID. 😡 said taking Motrin could have made it worse.
Rusty, kidney failure can cause the fever, earache, and headache.
Does anyone know what happened before she went to the ER? Does she take supplements or drink certain teas? Did she eat something unusual?
It initially seems something happened to cause the kidneys to shut down, which brought on the rest. Do note I am not a doctor, but I am just logically following what you have provided.
said taking Motrin could have made it worse....
I was just reading that, too! 😡
Hopefully, whatever infection/virus this might be can be quickly determined in her cultures, and, treated agressively.
Prayers for her medical team and for your son/family.
I pinged stars .... hopefully, she can add to the Prayer thread.
God, thank you for giving Rusty0604, time and again, the strength to see her through and persevere the burdens, trials and tribulations that have come her way.
We ask that you continue to protect her and her family with Your unbounded love.
We ask, in Jesus’s name, that You lighten her load and ease these burdens, if it be Thy will.
Prayers up! Asking the Lord to guide her physicians and heal her completely. Asking Him to help her, and her loved ones perceive His presence and be comforted.
No, yes and sort of.
People, especially older people, who are in the hospital already often have strokes. That is why they tend to give older patients blood thinners and put the compression leggings on them if they are going to be down for a while.
Thanks for pinging us to let us know this situation Rusty. I’m so sorry for all involved. Very frightening. Prayers and love sent across the miles
