Astronomy Picture of the Day - NGC 300: A Galaxy of Stars
NASA ^ | 2 Dec, 2024 | Image Credit & Copyright: Daniel Stern

Explanation: This galaxy is unusual for how many stars it seems that you can see. Stars are so abundantly evident in this deep exposure of the spiral galaxy NGC 300 because so many of these stars are bright blue and grouped into resolvable bright star clusters. Additionally, NGC 300 is so clear because it is one of the closest spiral galaxies to Earth, as light takes only about 6 million years to get here. Of course, galaxies are composed of many more faint stars than bright, and even more of a galaxy's mass is attributed to unseen dark matter. NGC 300 spans nearly the same amount of sky as the full moon and is visible with a small telescope toward the southern constellation of the Sculptor. The featured image was captured in October from Rio Hurtado, Chile and is a composite of over 20 hours of exposure.

I wonder if when stars are closer... less than light years away from one another if space is still as cold as we know it to be here in the shade... In the eclipse of the earth or moon... in the shadows... or, is heat only available/present in direct light?

"My God! It's full of stars!"

2010.... darn good sci-fi movie, especially for the early 1980s. Highly recommend the books and the movie. (Sequels to 2001: A Space Odyssey)

Pluto is 5,000 times closer to the sun than the nearest star. It’s less than 1/1000th of a light year from the sun. Yet it’s cold enough for nitrogen to freeze solid on its surface.

“NGC 300 spans nearly the same amount of sky as the full moon”

Wow, that is astonishing. I thought all galaxies were about the same size as stars.

Hearing the theme from “2001: A Space Odyssey” in my head for some strange reason.

Lol. They have to add propaganda about dark matter to everything, I guess.

Why is the center orange and tilted in a different plane than the rest of the galaxy?

It’s like a donut with sparkles whose jelly center is about to fall out.
