Promising results for COPD treatment: Researchers find form of vitamin B3 reduces lung inflammation

We live longer and longer, and as we age, a lot of us develop a series of health issues and chronic diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which is found in around 600 million individuals globally. However, only half of them know they have the disease.

COPD patients often experience shortness of breath, persistent cough with mucus, wheezing and frequent respiratory infections, which can make everyday activities difficult.

Now a study suggests that a form of vitamin B3 may be the key to improving quality of life for these patients.

"In the study, we show that nicotinamide riboside, also known as vitamin B3, can reduce lung inflammation in COPD patients," says Associate Professor Morten Scheibye-Knudsen.

"This is significant, because inflammation can lead to reduced lung function in these patients," he says.

The double-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled study included 40 COPD patients and 20 healthy control subjects. The patients either received a placebo or the vitamin B3 in doses of two grams a day. The results showed a significant drop in the inflammation marker (interleukin 8 or IL 8) in patients treated with the vitamin B3. After six weeks, the researchers observed a drop in IL 8 levels of 53 percent, and this effect increased by 63 percent after another 12 weeks.

In other words, the group treated with vitamin B3 experienced reduced lung inflammation during the study.

The researchers also found that COPD patients have lower levels of NAD in the blood, which is associated with accelerated aging based on DNA methylation levels. Treatment with vitamin B3 resulted in higher NAD levels and showed signs of delaying cellular aging.

Nicotinamide riboside is a supplement you can find at health food stores. I have taken it for several years, but a study later came out that showed it could accelerate triple-negative breast cancer, so, to be cautious, we stopped taking it.

I believe it could be one of those things that works great, if you need it, but may be too much, if you don’t.

Thanks for detailing your honest personal experience with this type of B Vitamin. I have COPD, but I will pass on trying this particular version of the vitamin. No need to literally shop for trouble.

Lee, this was that prior study:

https://freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/4108444/posts

It could be this is not an issue for those with COPD, because they just don’t make enough nicotinamide riboside, on their own.

Yes, we do actually make some of this, at least when we are younger, as a step in vitamin processing.

I had a bout of it last week. Cold weather seems to be the only time I have it. I was surprised when some Snapple brand snapple apple juice drink seemed to utterly destroy it. Will try it again the next bout I have. I do have Pulmonary Fibrosis, COPD comes with the territory. So does Dyspnea, Fear of not catching your breath.

From the study:

Forty patients with COPD (mean age, 71.9 years) and a blood eosinophil count of less than 0.3 × 109 cells per liter, who were ex-smokers and had a smoking history of more than 10 pack-years, were recruited into the study. Furthermore, we enrolled a convenience sample of lung-healthy controls who were similar to the patients with COPD in terms of age, sex and body mass index (BMI) but who reported being never-smokers with no history of lung disease (mean age, 70.9 years). Participants were randomized 1:1 to receive either NR or placebo for 6 weeks and attended three study visits: pre-treatment and post-treatment and a follow-up 12 weeks after post-treatment.

So the treatment was 1 gram of nicotinamide riboside (NR) twice a day, for people with low eosinophil levels, for six weeks, then they tested them at the end of the six weeks and then again 12 weeks after stopping the NR.

That's a very high dose. Studies have been done on a much lower amount being helpful for other conditions.

Remember to check with your doctor, especially if going beyond more normal amounts.

Lee, Laz has tried nicotinamide riboside in the past couple days and he experienced a quite positive, early result.

He speaks to it, here:

The study administered it for six weeks, but Laz says he felt better than what his inhalers could do.

Guys, I went back to find some other options for COPD.

NAC:
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4744393/

Iloprost and mioprostol:
https://freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/4049453/posts

Vitamin C (I would encourage time release forms):
https://freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/3803267/posts

Soluble fiber or fecal transplants:
https://freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/4220246/posts

One of the above had a post with a reference to Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) as being helpful. A prior study I put up showed taking 500 mg of taurine three times a day increased SOD by 20%:

I hope these can help both of you.
