On Gaetz, the Senate did its job. It has more work to do on Trump’s nominees.

The Senate did its job.

Former congressman Matt Gaetz (R-Florida) will not become attorney general, withdrawing from consideration this week after he spent a day on Capitol Hill learning that at least four Republicans would oppose his nomination — enough to tank it on the Senate floor.

On the most basic level, this shows that President-elect Donald Trump feels constrained by the constitutional order. It also suggests that enough Republicans will refuse to let him make “recess appointments” — a maneuver of questionable constitutionality that would have allowed Mr. Trump to install high executive branch officers without Senate consent, at least in extreme circumstances such as Mr. Gaetz’s nomination. And it indicates that there is a decisive bloc of GOP senators who still take seriously the chamber’s responsibility to advise and consent on presidential nominees. Mr. Trump won election fair and square. But so did those who sit in Congress. He cannot do whatever he likes.

Mr. Trump has privately told allies that he hopes Mr. Gaetz’s failure will ease confirmation of other controversial nominees. It should do the opposite, steeling senators to conduct the scrutiny required of Mr. Trump’s remaining picks. Several are plainly unworthy of high office.

Mr. Trump’s defense secretary nominee, Pete Hegseth, denies sexually assaulting a woman in California in 2017 and was never charged criminally, although he paid her to sign a nondisclosure agreement. This history raises questions about how he would handle sexual assault in the military. Mr. Hegseth, as a Fox News host, also urged Mr. Trump to grant executive clemency to three U.S. service personnel accused or convicted of war crimes. He also lacks relevant experience running major enterprises such as the Defense Department...

Trump should threaten absolute war against the legislative branch.

Well said, and he is quite likely of a mind to do so. Perhaps privately prior to inaugurations, but certainly by action thereafter. He may also decide to deal quickly and effectively with Rino's in the Congress, both directly and by supporting their MAGA opponents during the campaigns.

Declaring war on the media may not be prudent but certainly defunding NPR and developing effective workarounds that alter the leftist media's business model is warranted.

That we are in a street fight for our nation would seem obvious if only by considering the anti-MAGA's recent behavior and likely next moves.

Pete Hegseth's personal domestic life currently may be stable and under control; he is a great example of the kind of competent pit bull we need to stave off our international enemies.

Harvey Mike a gay man who favored raping underage boys had a ship named after him in ‘21.

Anyone who thinks the Post gives a damn about ‘sexual issues’ is a fool. For the Deep State’s butt boys the only thing the Washington Post cares about is “R” or “D”.

Don’t truth the liars.

He got notice that Mitch and other swamp rinos would make sure he never would be confirmed. And they’ll continue to toss roadblocks in PDJT’s way. For at least two years. Likely why Rick Scott wasn’t even close for majority spkr.

Nothing. The Senate didn’t do crap. This is the thugs and goons of the editorial board expressing how powerful press haters are when taking down Republicans.

Delusions of Watergate - stenographers to a disgruntled FBI agent who hated Nixon and all Republicans.

These editors didn’t give a damn about anything Hunter did, or Harvey Milk or Clinton or John Edwards. Nope, they only ‘care’ when it’s Republican they can stick it too.

The good news is they’ll either reform or they’ll go out of business. Either is better than what they have now: ugly bias and hatred of half the people of the United States.

As if they care what is or isn’t in the scope. Who’s gonna hold them accountable?

The Big Guy's Department of Just Us,the same folks who, until a few hours ago, were trying to put DJT in prison for decades, investigated Gaetz, one of Trump's loudest supporters, and filed no charges.

What did the senate do on Gaetz. Exacly?

It was represented by GOP politicians who decided the matter based on the Queensberry Rules, without regard to recent history that clearly indicates our nation is in a street fight for its future. Such action speak volumes.

We need to have our new DOJ investigate our four “friends” in the Senate with a fine tooth comb. Including rewards for dirt from their past, all the way back to birth. I bet a good team of detectives with an unlimited budget could find enough dirt to make them tow the party line else face the public release of said dirt.

The same Senate that has been a joke for the past 20 years. Maybe longer? Maybe always?

Hypocrisy abounds! Especially when Democrats are involved. And spinless RINOs allow them to get away with it in the name of peace and getting along.

“ Gave 4 hard NO’s on nomination so Gaetz bowed out.”

Trump is not even in office yet. Whatever the senate did had nothing to do with anythingg official. There is no research or documentation on this. We’re still in a majority Democrat senate.

Uh, you clearly haven’t been watching the news. Gaetz said there were 4 hard NO’s—McConnell, Collins. Murkowski and the new guy from Utah—Curtis and at least 2 likley NO’s. He, Trump and Vance couldn’t convince them, so he dropped out b/c there wouldn’t have been enough YES’s. These Senators hate Trump.
