On the most basic level, this shows that President-elect Donald Trump feels constrained by the constitutional order. It also suggests that enough Republicans will refuse to let him make “recess appointments” — a maneuver of questionable constitutionality that would have allowed Mr. Trump to install high executive branch officers without Senate consent, at least in extreme circumstances such as Mr. Gaetz’s nomination. And it indicates that there is a decisive bloc of GOP senators who still take seriously the chamber’s responsibility to advise and consent on presidential nominees. Mr. Trump won election fair and square. But so did those who sit in Congress. He cannot do whatever he likes.
Mr. Trump has privately told allies that he hopes Mr. Gaetz’s failure will ease confirmation of other controversial nominees. It should do the opposite, steeling senators to conduct the scrutiny required of Mr. Trump’s remaining picks. Several are plainly unworthy of high office.
Mr. Trump’s defense secretary nominee, Pete Hegseth, denies sexually assaulting a woman in California in 2017 and was never charged criminally, although he paid her to sign a nondisclosure agreement. This history raises questions about how he would handle sexual assault in the military. Mr. Hegseth, as a Fox News host, also urged Mr. Trump to grant executive clemency to three U.S. service personnel accused or convicted of war crimes. He also lacks relevant experience running major enterprises such as the Defense Department...

What did the senate do on Gaetz. Exacly?
Nothing, Gaetz was a head fake. Art of the Deal.
The Washington Post Editorial Bored needs to get themselves some real jobs. Maybe babysitting Sammy Brinton, Merry Garland, Alex Mayorkass, Karine Jean-Peter, etc. for Papa Biden.
Someone posted the idea of an appointed Czar to investigate congressional corruption, hopefully including that slush fund for sexual payoffs. Trump should threaten absolute war against the legislative branch. And the media. We aren’t going to get anywhere by being nice, or by trying to compromise.
Gave 4 hard NO’s on nomination so Gaetz bowed out.

Windy Me Too bimbos suck men into signing “non-disclosure agreements” every day. They get rich and the male victim keeps his job.
Weird how non of the dem appointments were ever contested by the dem party
“recess appointments” — a maneuver of questionable constitutionality . . ..

Where was the editorial board of the WaPo when democrat presidents used this power? Hypocrisy means nothing to evil unethical dimocrats.
compost celebrating a successful smear
yay
democracy is working
Or the GOPe.
Methinks the swamp scum are gloating too soon.
It wasn’t the “senate doing its job”. It was more like the “senate was afraid of Gaetz doing HIS job”.
Really? Then why did Trump ask him to withdraw before there was even a hearing?
Gotta love the Washington Post...somehow they think they get to determine who is “worthy of higher office”....this as they claimed Trump was only worthy of a jail cell. These folks are beyond delusional.
I’m glad Bezos has let the editorial board back into their playpen. They really had the sads when they couldn’t do their Kamala endorsement
Just wait til they figure out they been played...
Republican Senators who voted to confirm Biden and Obama’s execrable appointments would have voted against Gaetz.
Just one example, John Brennan, member of the communist party and converted muslim, was confirmed as director of the CIA. He later lied about the Hunter Biden laptop and the Russia Hoax. Only 34 R’s voted no on Brennan! How many of the yeses on Brennan were No’s on Gaetz?
How dare they pretend they are not deep state stooges?
Nothing. These “journalists” just make up stuff. Furthermore, everything else in this article is two days old.
