The QuenchSea 3.0 is presently on Kickstarter QuenchSea
It's ironic that even when surrounded by water, sailors who are lost at sea can still die of thirst. The QuenchSea 3.0 portable desalinator is designed to keep that from happening, and it requires no power source other than its user's arm muscles.
Currently the subject of a Kickstarter campaign, the QuenchSea 3.0 is made by British company Hydro Wind Energy. The firm debuted the original human-powered QuenchSea device back in 2020, followed by the smaller deep-sea-pressure-powered QuenchSea Reel in 2023.
On the original model, users arm-pumped a lever that forced seawater through a triple filtration system and a reverse osmosis membrane. The seawater was drawn in through one silicone tube that ran into the ocean, while the purified water was dispensed out of another tube that led to a bottle or other container.
This setup was said to remove salt, viruses, bacteria, microplastic particles and other contaminants from seawater at a claimed rate of over 2 liters (0.5 US gal) of water per hour on average, or up to 3 liters under ideal conditions. The resulting drinking water was claimed to meet World Health Organization (WHO) standards.

Move a prison to the California coast and have the inmates walk on a hamster wheel 8 hours a day.
Run them in three shifts.
That’s great. How many gallons can be run through it before the active components need changing or purging?
Oh, reading further down... 79 gallons estimated life.
Certainly a life saver.
And use a long hose to get the drinking water to the lifeboat?
That’s like my idea of putting crackheads on a treadmill with a vial of crack just out of reach. So many ways to generate electricity.

Sell the purified water to the local water companies.
Set up dozens of treadmills so the inmates go for their walk looking out at the ocean. Play peppy music. Have good lighting.
Pretty interesting if more than Kickstarter Vaporware.
Do you know what the thread is about?
Could also be great for hiking......,
This would be an ideal component for a combat aircraft survival kit.....

The stores are full of affordable water filters and water purifiers for backpackers and even for expeditions and emergency home use, but sea water survival is a whole different game.
I own a fair collection of water filters and purifiers, including Katadyn and for a couple of years kept my eyes open for a previously owned handheld desalination unit hoping to find one in the $700 range, with no success when I lived on the ocean.
Here is a Katadyn version.

Empty jug not included.
But very cool device if it works.
There are clear vinyl floating inflatable passive solar stills available that, according to online reviews/testing, seem to be effective, and don’t wear out your arm muscles.
Depending on the sun when you desperately need water and might even be way behind in hydration to start with, is not dependable, nice as additional and backup, but not as the only or best choice if you can afford a device.
These already exist.

Or, to paraphrase Bill Burr, put fatties on the treadmill and dangle Oreos in front of them. The advantage is that they have lots of stored energy, unlike the crackheads.
