I went to the grocery store yesterday and found roast beef for $6/lb. Two weeks ago, it was $16. Heck, when I started working in a deli in 1991, it was $8. Milk for $3.19/gallon? Sharp cheddar cheese for $3.78/pound? Cream cheese for $2.26/half pound? Butter for $2.98/pound? Chicken breast for $1.99?
I've been going to Aldi's lately, so I don't know exactly how to compare to before my days of shopping Safeway online since the grocery stores shut down for the pandemic, but these prices seem pre-pandemic to me. My sister reports that where she's from, so much of everything is on 2-for-1 sales.
Have other people noticed a sudden collapse of prices?
Not where I am.
Nope
Not yet, but I expect it will in the next few months.
RC Cola was on sale, buy two, get two free, but the nasal spray jumped from $1.98 to $3.32. Egads! But no, nothing else has changed. Ground beef is still as expensive as ever and I won’t buy it. Heck, even if the price for ground beef comes I still won’t buy it cuz I don’t want mRNA tainted products.
Around these parts "picking up a few things" is still a hundred dollar bill.
Not with groceries, but the price of gas has dropped 40 cents in this past week.
I see NO change!
I’m going to smoke a brisket this weekend... I’m going to be disgusted or pleasantly surprised when I walk out of Costco Friday.
Not yet, but I hope what you are seeing is a trend.
No.
I’m in liberal state.
And in fact this past year they keep pandering to the criminal class, such as closing 2nd doors in a passive attempt to again make it harder for crooks…not to mention us good customers.
So letting crime continue probably won’t help our prices much.
But, I’m hopeful in a few months maybe things will really start heading down.
Oh, but they still need to get rid of minimum wage. In liberal state, guess how high that is?
Still no local point of sale pricing authority. The local store cannot mark things down to move aging inventories or products facing "Best by" expiration dates like they used to.
Where does your sister live? Maybe we can order food from her city.
I do the shopping for my wife and me. I am seeing gas prices drop to the high $2’s, but groceries are pretty much hit or miss. There have been sales on steak lately. Strip steaks were $10.95 a pound last week. But right next to it were the other cuts starting at about $18.95/pound.
Produce is still high. I love local apples, and they are selling for $1.49/pound. Three years ago they were $0.99/pound this time of year.
I have been keeping my receipts for the last couple of weeks. I figured I would create a little database to review over the next few years.
My expectation is that price increases will likely slow. I really don’t expect to see price declines any time soon on any product that requires long transport or storage. The supply chain is about to get hit again with the East Coast dock strike.
Not in NJ.
I don’t understand why beef is 2 or 3 times the cost of pork.
Well hadn’t seen that yet but livestock feed has dropped slightly.
This weeks’ “deals” at local grocery store
Butter $4.50/lb
Beef for stew $6.48
Tri Tip $6.48
Ground Chuck $5/lb
Head of lettuce $1.80
Nearest Aldi is 25 miles away
SMALL jar of Miracle Whip...7 dollars.
Not around here.
There are lots of items that are "on sale" at substantial discounts. But prices went up so much that the "sale" price turns out to be the same as the list price from last month.
That game has become tiresome.
I must say that gasoline has gotten much cheaper. It is below $3.00 per gallon now. Perhaps there is less commuter traffic? There have been a number of layoffs from large-sized businesses, and I see "For Lease" signs in every retail complex. Several restaurants where I once dined have closed.
House prices remain high and the asking prices have not come down. Time-to-sell has substantially increased, beyond 60 days.
Looks like we are recession.
No
But Kroger has turkeys for 49 cents a pound. They do that every year though.
Went and checked out Aldis several weeks ago. They were no cheaper than Krogers or Walmart.
