Anyone suffer from gout that is not, shall I say, "chronic" but triggered from either alcohol or specific foods?

If so, do you take a supplement you find works well even when eating those foods?

Cherry supps? Curious to see if there is a consensus here.

Thanks!

I am 76 years old and had my first gout attack in 1979 on the same night my father did. Mine went relatively untreated except for occasional flareups until 2015, largely because most doctors don’t know anything about gout or how to treat it. Left untreated, it causes large lumps in the soft tissue of the elbows, feet hands and other places. All of which are unsightly and sometimes very painful.

I found a doctor in Hopkinsville, Kentucky that suffered from Gouty Arthritis and also finally found a way to almost completely prevent the flareups. That method was to take 300 mg of Allopurinol daily to keep the uric acid in my system below a .6 .

What I always suspected about Gout being hereditary is pretty much proven now (all of my 8 siblings have various symptoms).

I haven’t suffered from Gout but I have four friends that have flare ups so bad it stops them from working all Loggers and equipment operators. I asked my Chiripractor about it a few years ago and he was well versed on Gout because his father suffers from it. He recommended a supplement called Burdock Root it’s available from Whole Foods and nutrition stores, and one of my friends gets it from Amazon. All four of my friends are taking it and I can’t recall the last time anyone mentioned their Gout. It’s not real expensive either.

I stopped eating sardines (and pretty much any fish ) and drinking beer and that helped.

I was not that fond of sardines, but I ate them on cottage cheese for lunches and it helped me to lose weight. No big loss. Not a big beer drinker at this point and I only have to buy beer once or twice a month.

I am also drinking soda water at this point too and supplement with tart cherry (Which also has melatonin so I take it before bed.)

My reply from the other day same gout topic.

” “People need to understand that while specific dietary factors, such as eating red meat, can trigger gout attacks”

HALF right. Specific dietary factors, FOR YOU!

Both what specific dietary factors brings on an attack or helps soothe an attack is DIFFERENT for each individual.

Blaming “red meat” is a red herring! (pi)

I have had SEVERE gout attacks, many. Unable to walk without crutches, unable to lay down or sleep.

What does work is Indomethacin. Some relief in a few hours, total relief in a few days. It was a MIRACLE drug for me.

Then, take Allopurinol every day. Gout will mostly be in your past, without giving up red meat or drinking cherry juice.

Colchicine never worked for me, besides “Colchicine can cause serious side effects or death if levels of colchicine are too high in your body.”

I get an attack maybe once a year, I keep Indomethacin handy, just in case.

Cherry consumption and decreased risk of recurrent gout attacks

Snip.... Results: Our study included 633 individuals with gout. Cherry intake over a 2-day period was associated with a 35% lower risk of gout attacks compared with no intake (multivariate OR 0.65 [95% CI 0.50-0.85]). Cherry extract intake showed a similar inverse association (multivariate OR 0.55 [95% CI 0.30-0.98]). The effect of cherry intake persisted across subgroups stratified by sex, obesity status, purine intake, alcohol use, diuretic use, and use of antigout medications. When cherry intake was combined with allopurinol use, the risk of gout attacks was 75% lower than during periods without either exposure (OR 0.25 [95% CI 0.15-0.42]).

Conclusion: These findings suggest that cherry intake is associated with a lower risk of gout attacks.

Other recent studies say there is no benefit. This study seems to conlude that taking Cherries with Allopuinol is very beneficial, but did not state the benefit of Allopurinol alone.

Bananas. They have potassium. Postassium helps to relieve symptoms of gout.
