New research showing the association between greater bean and pulse consumption and improved shortfall nutrient intakes and a higher diet quality in American adults is published.
Pulses are the edible seeds of plants in the legume family. Pulses grow in pods and come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors and include beans, peas, chickpeas, and lentils.
Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2001-2018, the analyses modeled the addition of one and two servings of beans in adults. Results show that greater consumption of beans is associated with significant increases in several shortfall nutrients, including dietary fiber, potassium, magnesium, iron, folate, and choline.
Additionally, the addition of 1 and 2 servings of beans daily to the US typical dietary pattern significantly increased overall diet quality, as assessed by USDA's Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015). In fact, HEI-2015 total scores were 15% greater with an additional serving of beans and 19% higher with 2 servings of beans, relative to the US typical dietary pattern.
Additionally, the majority of US adults fall short on meeting potassium recommendations.
"This research clearly shows that eating beans and pulses is good, but eating more is better," states Yanni Papanikolaou. "Beans and pulses are excellent sources of fiber, folate and potassium and excellent sources of plant protein that also provide iron and zinc like other protein foods."
Research published in April and June 2024 shows that dietary patterns rich in canned and dried kidney beans, black beans, pinto beans and/or chickpeas are associated with significantly higher diet quality scores. The highest diet quality scores are associated with 24% decreased risk of cardiovascular disease, 31% reduced risk for coronary heart disease, 20% lowered risk for stroke, 23% decreased risk for diabetes, and 6% reduced risk for cancer.

As Benjamin Franklin, Great American Founding Father said:
“Fart proudly”.
My beef chili is chock full 'o beans, and I fart proudly. Freely.
And I think the dog actually likes it.
“the addition of 1 and 2 servings of beans daily”
Hmmmm..beans twice a day! One would tire of that quickly I suspect!
“The more you fart, the better you feel
So eat your beans at every meal”
All beans are pulses, but not all pulses are beans. ;)
I could live on rice & beans if I didn’t have to cook for anyone else. ;)
These past few growing seasons I’ve been adding drying beans to my garden - they keep forever, have a lot of nutritional value and are very versatile in cooking.

Picking the last of my Cayenne peppers in the next couple of days before the frost tuesday night.
Here’s my Spicy Navy Bean soup recipe:
I scrub, rinse several times, and then soak 2 cups navy beans with fresh water overnight.
In the crockpot with water 1 1/2” over beans for 5 1/2 hours on high:
1.0 ounce of vegetable oil max (heart healthy Omega 3) Sunflower/Canola/Olive oil mix, no Soybean!
2 or 3 small okra (sliced up)
3 small green onions (sliced up)
7 or 8 small dried whole red pepper pods (Hot) Cayenne
1/4 teaspoon Mexican chili powder (just for the beautiful golden color)
3/4 teaspoon seasoning salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper (add at the last 2 hours only!)
After in the bowl I give it a couple twist of a McCormick Peppercorn Medley Grinder and serve with a hard loaf style bread or corn bread
Real Americans disagree.
Also...soaking and or precooking beans, then draining and using them reduces the gasses

Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.
One can read about how eating pulse fared for Daniel and his 3 friends ;
I don’t know that meme. Is that from a movie?
