New research showing the association between greater bean and pulse consumption and improved shortfall nutrient intakes and a higher diet quality in American adults is published.
Pulses are the edible seeds of plants in the legume family. Pulses grow in pods and come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors and include beans, peas, chickpeas, and lentils.
Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2001-2018, the analyses modeled the addition of one and two servings of beans in adults. Results show that greater consumption of beans is associated with significant increases in several shortfall nutrients, including dietary fiber, potassium, magnesium, iron, folate, and choline.
Additionally, the addition of 1 and 2 servings of beans daily to the US typical dietary pattern significantly increased overall diet quality, as assessed by USDA's Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015). In fact, HEI-2015 total scores were 15% greater with an additional serving of beans and 19% higher with 2 servings of beans, relative to the US typical dietary pattern.
Additionally, the majority of US adults fall short on meeting potassium recommendations.
"This research clearly shows that eating beans and pulses is good, but eating more is better," states Yanni Papanikolaou. "Beans and pulses are excellent sources of fiber, folate and potassium and excellent sources of plant protein that also provide iron and zinc like other protein foods."
Research published in April and June 2024 shows that dietary patterns rich in canned and dried kidney beans, black beans, pinto beans and/or chickpeas are associated with significantly higher diet quality scores. The highest diet quality scores are associated with 24% decreased risk of cardiovascular disease, 31% reduced risk for coronary heart disease, 20% lowered risk for stroke, 23% decreased risk for diabetes, and 6% reduced risk for cancer.

I try to get beans at least four meals a week.
Sorry, but we are meat eaters. We don’t want to become Mexican bean eaters and start farting.
From the excerpt:
“...Adding beans and pulses...”
“...Pulses include beans...”
Beans, beans the musical fruit,
the more you eat, the more you poot.
Beans, beans are good for your heart,
the more you eat, the more you fart.
I wonder how much they spent on this study too verify that beans are good for you.
In further news a study shows that water is usually wet.
Eat beans and your body adjusts. Fibrous veggies are important for health. Jeesh!
The more you fart the better you feel,
so eat your beans at every meal.
I haven’t made lentil soup in awhile. Mmmmm…

One of my primary goals is to always have a pulse.
If there is anywhere the word ‘diversity’ should be welcome is in one’s diet. Simple, nutritious, and very budget friendly. Pressure cookers like the Instant Pot make short shrift of some lentils in as little as 6 minutes, unsoaked beans in as little as 40. I’m a meat and potatoes guy at heart, but when you look under the hood of these things, they just make sense.
My mammaw used to say that all the time. Is it just a southern thing?
“This research clearly shows that eating beans and pulses is good, but eating more is better,”
Except it’s not research and it shows nothing. It’s just anti-meat drivel based on model, unusable data (not designed for the study and exluding so many confounding factors) and shody statistics. It’s pure junk science.
Beans like any other grains are toxic to humans because of their toxins, anti nutrients and carbs. Eating beans raw and you die, that’s how toxic they are. Even their proteins are mostly crap and end as crap and fart instead of being digested like animal protein.
Please, stop making people sick with this eat-plants propaganda.
I don’t think I would like beans that have pulses...
I just looked...yes!! I have a bag of lentils and Walmart is delivering carrots and celery this morning. Bought my first leek yesterday at farm market..I’ll use a bit of that.
“the analyses modeled the addition “ What does this mean? It sound like to me they just took the known nutrients of these items and said the addition of these nutrients are good for you and through a percentage out to indicate an improvement. No actual testing! no proof!
Eating them regularly makes the body adjust. The gassy effect goes away.
