The Garden Thread - October, 2024
October 1, 2024 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 10/01/2024 6:10:14 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Man, we have so many hickory nuts! More than we have acorns. I don’t relish those being airborne and aimed at my house.

My sprained ankle is slowly getting better. It was Oct. 8. Today is the first day not using a walker, just one walking stick! I got out for the first time doing a couple of chores. Got on the atv sidesaddle and went down to the mailbox and barn. Put away the mason bee houses in the cloth bag in the barn. Coiled up a drained hose and put it in the barn and brought up a cardboard box for a new sewing machine I want to sell. Decided I am never going to use it. Too complicated. Doesn’t sound like I did much but it felt great. Hubby also picked 3 ripe roma tomatoes. We had a late volunteer this year come up in the pea pod cage and just let it go. It had 3 green tomatoes in September. Amazing they ripened, and the very top of the bush was still green. They will no doubt become the last tomato sandwich of the year.

to cut down on “coffee jitters”, take with theanine (which has several health benefits too- plus it helps boost dopamine levels even further than coffee alone- dopamine is the ‘feel good” stuff in the brain which helps mood, eases anxiety, calms stress levels etc

We’re in a spell of low to mid-30’s overnight. Daytime temps are going to be cooler (60’s) today & will be even more so tomorrow. The wind is blowing, leaves are flying. I am in “soup” mode .... just seems like soup weather. Since I have no garden to wrap up for the winter, I am cooking.

Yesterday, I made a minestrone & today, I have a pumpkin chili in the crockpot, should be ready for dinner. Dessert is apple cobbler, made from the apples we got from the orchard last Saturday. The house smells great with tasty food in the works. If anyone is interested in recipes, these two are ‘good’ IMO:

Thick & Hearty Minestrone Soup

Vegetarian Pumpkin Chili

(I just ignore that ‘Vegetarian’ is in the recipe title :-)

Those recipes look sooo delicious! Thanks for the tips!

We were on the road today. Got to see our son and his girlfriend for a little bit. He was working so we went to the restaurant where he works, and he made us a terrific pizza and a salad. The pizza had a pesto base, fire braised chicken, “house” cheese, tomato, feta, bacon, and parmesan. Homemade crust, mmmm good. The salad was also tasty: spring mix, fire braised chicken, bacon, feta, onion, cherry tomato, house-baked everything bread, with peppercorn Parmesan dressing. I wish we could visit for longer, but it is what it is. We should get to see them in a month or so, and then Christmas will probably be with us at our place for several days. Then I can really spoil them! :)

That sounds like my kinda’ pizza ... for starters, I love pesto. I had a bumper basil crop a couple of years ago & made pesto batches several times, froze it in small 1/2 cup containers. I might have one left. Despite being several years old, it’s still good coming out of the freezer. I used walnuts instead of pine nuts.

The pumpkin chili would be great with some cornbread. If I don’t stop eating it, I won’t have any to freeze!

Next cooking project will likely be pulling a pork picnic or butt roast out of the freezer & making BBQ (cook in crockpot until shreddable, BBQ sauce of choice).

That pumpkin chili might be gone before you know it!

I do enjoy putting a pork cut into the crockpot and adding BBQ sauce. One of the easiest meals ever.

It’s been nice to have two nights in a row off from cooking duties. It so rarely happens. I haven’t come up with a menu for the week. That’s probably my first job tomorrow. Oh, and I have to catch up on laundry, rake leaves, and do other yard clean up chores. We are almost home from our day trip away.

Driving has been crazy today. In each direction, we saw backed up traffic for MILES. The first one was some sort of fire on a semi. The second was on our trip home. Didn’t see what happened, but it was so bad that vehicles were just stopped and turned off. Soon after that we saw that they closed the highway and diverted traffic to a state road instead of the interstate. That must’ve been something really bad. Miles and miles of cars and trucks. We were lucky to have everything fine in our direction both times.

If you like feta as much as I do, try this no-cook appy.

Drizzle feta w/ olive oil, sprinkle w/ oregano. Add kalamata olives, crusty bread.

Would work for me! My husband is one of those who hates olives. Any suggestions for a substitute for him? I’m thinking sun dried tomatoes maybe? I might need to experiment.

The Army TOTALLY ruined ‘camping’ for me, LOL! Though I did camp a lot with my boys when they were young. We did The Boundary Waters a few times. Lots of fun and good fishing!

Also, they pretty much lived in our big tent at the other farm all summer when they were out of school. Worked for me! :)

Our ‘cabin’ is actually a house, but small and it totally smells like BOYS! I avoid it at all costs because it’s just more WORK for me when I go up there.

Bluegrass is awesome! I’m sure you’ve listened to Steve Martin and Eddie Brichell?

I LOVE her voice and I love ‘When You Get To Ashville.’ But there is so much great Bluegrass. You may not even consider this duo ‘true’ Bluegrass. ;)

How about, ‘I Love Being a Bum?’ or ‘Big Rock Candy Mountain?’ LOL! :)

We actually had a Tornado nearby this past February. Weirdest thing!

Yeah, it’s going to be a HUGE drop in temperature from one day to the next.

I just LOLed at your comment about the place smelling like BOYS. Every now and again I come across a ripe teenager. There’s a new young man at the self checkout lanes at Walmart. He has long hair, paints his nails, wears mascara, but sounds like a guy, has an Adam’s apple, has a figure like a guy, and SMELLS like a guy. Don’t get too close to him, or you’ll fall over. He isn’t fooling anyone. Just trying to get attention from somebody…anybody.

When my oldest (son) was a teenager, he took showers several times a day so he wouldn’t stink. He was paranoid about it. So I haven’t had to smell locker room (or cabin) odors for a while. The kid at Walmart is a doozy of a wakening. I wonder when his bosses will say something to him.

Thanks for the reminder to drain the hoses! I think I’ll surprise Beau and do that today before he comes home from the cabin.

That way HE has to roll them up and put them away if he wants to mow one more time. Me? I’m so OVER mowing for the season; bring on the snow! :)

I switched to mostly decaf a few years back. Less caffeine works wonders for my blood pressure. I’m back to normal, though I don’t think it’s just THAT that did it. :)

Fresh air? Sunshine? Clean Living? Probably. ;)
