The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
They lay 3-25 eggs and have a short life span. Didn't see any eggs underneath the leaves. I might have had an infestation caused by one or two moths laying eggs and now it's over with. Will keep checking for them though.
Agreed, the traps are still “up” and baited. I’ve seen a couple other squirrels but they so far seem to be avoiding the garden.
I keep trying to get the cats to hang around the garden by putting their food out there during the day, but they INSIST on being fed on the back porch or indoors.
If that gorgeous golden retriever that showed up several days ago had had no contact number or tag on it, and checking with neighbors and shelters failed, I might have just kept it, IF it didn’t bother the chickens... (Big if)
Yeah, I “can” and sometimes do take esp. smaller carcasses out to the woods on the SE side of our property (extends well beyond and no residences nearby), but, I figure enriching the garden soil is not a bad thing. That one Opo plant really took off when its roots reached (I think) the opossum I’d buried out there last fall.
It may all be for naught - NWS says we may get an early frost next Tu. or Wed. morning. I can & will cover SOME stuff... The good news is if we get past that, then we are forecast to get another lengthy warm / mostly sunny spell with daytime temps in the 80’s. (But, no rain - soils are really drying out again.)
Hahaha! Great memories...
Heh, I’ve saved a few seeds from those GREAT tasting orange color tomatoes, whatever they are. There are so few seeds, it is a bit difficult to get very many.
Funny story - I’d saved a few seeds from the “Best Boy” plant’s fruits (#2 non my taste best list). Had ‘em in a small paper envelope in a shallow tray to dry, and set that on my fish cleaning table (lots of shade) under a bigger tray (in case of rain / mist), inverted and propped up on one end about 1/4” for air circulation. I went out to check it a couple days later and the setup was intact, but the seeds gone. I figure ants or something got ‘em. Guess I better stick to drying seeds in the house, even if my wife hates the added “clutter”.
Let us know how the orange tomatoes go. I got some big orange ones this year. Will try and post a picture. I saved some seeds for next spring. LOL on burying the squirrels. My Dad was the gardener. He fished a lot and whenever he caught a big carp he buried it whole in the vegetable garden.

Just catching back up on the thread, so thanks for the ping.
I’ve been dealing with Milton issues this week. Early in the week it was to see if decisions were to evacuate or hunker down for my family in various spots of Florida. They all hunkered down but it was a hard decision.
Now dealing with the aftermath. All have various problems. Some have power, no water. Some have water, no power. Most have limited cell phone service, no internet.
Lots of fallen trees, and I’m talking huge very mature trees. Need chainsaws and backhoes to move them. Some roads are damaged from sinkholes.
One niece was able to locate a generator so that’s been installed as of last evening.
Cleanup will take weeks, and that’s after power is restored.
I take so much for granted. Truly blessed to have a roof over my head, electricity, plenty of food, clean water, and so much more.
And October is not even halfway through!
What kind of crumbs do you like best? Cookies? What kind?

Just be sure the crumbs are dry (to soak up the apple juices).

Nothing like a Natural Disaster to make those of us not effected count our blessings - and help where we can, of course!
If you’re going to donate, send $ to Samaritan’s Purse. I trust them above all others to get the money to where it’s needed and NOT spent on overhead!
Both of my friends, Sarasota and Port Saint Lucie, came through OK with little damage, but of course there’s the cleanup of their neighborhoods due to the wind and rain.
From what I’m reading, the most damage came from the (relatively) unexpected tornadoes that came along with this storm once it hit land. We are VERY ‘weather aware’ around here for tornadoes!
