In 524 BC, a force of 50,000 Persian soldiers travelled across the Western Desert of Egypt. Their intended target was The Oracle of Amun, however the army would not make it. They would instead disappear in a sandstorm, in a legend that still draws curiosity today.

lidar

Agreed. All they accomplished was wasting research $$.

Ironically, I was positing the use of LIDAR for such research before the equipment was even small enough for a Cessna; in this era, there's no excuse whatsoever for a researcher not to use a LIDAR/GPR drone to narrow down a target area for hand search with limited resources...

Thanks! Like the Romans, the Persians used conquered peoples as a recruiting pool, and used the foreign troops in other conquered places where they'd be unable to join forces with the locals. Also, given the size the empire, it wouldn't have been possible to do it in any other way. When the Persians lost (and they had some real ugly losses) they, like the Romans, didn't collapse, but rebuilt.

After Salamis, the Athenian Themistocles, who'd convinced the Athenians to build their navy in the first place, was ostracized / exiled from Athens, and took a job as the able city administrator of one of the Persian-ruled Greek cities of Anatolia.

Overall, in Greece, the Persians got their asses handed to them, but used cash and skill to keep the Greeks from uniting against them, even to the point where they paid the Spartans' cost of building a navy to compete with the naval supremacy of Athens during the Peloponnesian War, leading to the defeat of Athens.

By that time Sparta had exhausted itself, and was comprehensively defeated by the Thebans, who systematically destroyed the slave-based economy of Sparta by freeing the long-occupied non-Spartan neighbors in the Peloponnese.

Given the shoestring approach they were taking, they probably didn’t spend any grant money, but were strictly getting the cash from a TV, cable, or streaming channel.

Also, this is a pretty old show.

A similar effect is seen among those who die on Everest — dessication, loss of tissue, wind damage.

There’s a sci-fi novel series that deals with a similar plot A Roman Legion marches through a wormhole and winds up on another planet......

There was also a ton of booty between points A and B by land.
