Neuroscience research suggests ketones can enhance cognitive function and protect brain networks (Keto helps)

Researchers have identified mechanisms in the brain's hippocampal network that are rescued by ketones. These findings build on previous research showing that ketones can alleviate neurological and cognitive affects.

As we age, our brain naturally becomes more insulin resistant. This creates a breakdown in communication between neurons, causing symptoms like changes in mood, cognitive decline, and eventually neurodegeneration. Nathan A. Smith, MS, Ph.D. and fellow researchers studied the mechanisms in the brain that break down when insulin resistance is suddenly present, like in trauma, but before symptoms manifest into chronic conditions, like diabetes or Alzheimer's.

"Once neuronal function is lost, there is no recovering the connection, so we need to identify when the function first becomes impaired," said Smith, the principal investigator of this research.

"This study accomplishes that by bringing us closer to understanding how to rescue the function of impaired neurons and prevent or delay devastating diseases like Alzheimer's."

Using mice as a model system, researchers focused on the hippocampus, a well understood region of the brain responsible for learning and memory. They found acute insulin resistance impairs several aspects of neuronal function, including synaptic activity, axonal conduction, network synchronization, synaptic plasticity, and action potential properties—the processes critical to support the communication flow in and out of neurons.

Researchers then administered D-βHb, a form of ketones, a byproduct released by the liver when the body burns fat instead of glucose for energy. They found that the synaptic activity that was previously impacted by acute insulin resistance was rescued, conduction in axons increased, neurons were resynchronized, and synaptic plasticity.

Smith said, "We are now looking to understand the role that astrocytes and other glia cells play in acute insulin resistance."

The easiest way to get healthy ketones is via a very low carb diet, if you can handle that.

You can supplement with ketones, but they would not be self-sustaining.

I never really liked the taste. I prefer a stout or IPA but if this is what I gotta do for my health. Okay, then.

Diesel exhaust is high in ketones.

Low carb is only the first part of Keto. You also have to increase your fat intake with good fats, olive, avocado and coconut along with quality beef and fatty fish like tuna, salmon, sardines and kippers.

Macadamia nuts are higher fat and lower carb, but also more expensive.

There are carbs, proteins and fat. If you reduce carbs significantly, the fat and protein MUST increase. Evidence on “seed oils” is limited and variable, but arguably increasing “oils” isn’t very helpful. Eating real foods with higher fat contents - naturally higher fat - helps. Demonizing saturated fat has done a lot of harm.

“Demonizing saturated fat has done a lot of harm.”

Ain’t that the truth! I am in the midst of eating much clean beef and other proteins, as well as increasing my saturated fat intake. Cut out most veg and fruit. Been 3 days, and seems to have solved a health issue I have had for @18 months. 3 days!!! See my doc today, who has been trying to solve this for past 18 months.

Yes, but the ratios are important. Keto is high fat, moderate protein, low carb for good reasons. The main one being that burning fat for energy is how you get in ketosis. If you don’t eat enough fat to support ketosis, your body will burn muscle protein. Which is obviously not good. Most people who fail at keto have their ratios off.

“Diesel exhaust is high in ketones.”

That’s why it is very unhealthy to be near the podium when Nancy Pelosi is speaking.
