Charge up to 80% in just 9.8 minutes! Gotion High-tech showcases its latest battery technology innovations

Gotion High-Tech, is a leading global player in battery technology and energy solutions, specialising in the research, development, and production of lithium-ion batteries and energy storage systems.

The company, which Volkswagen holds a significant stake in, focuses on innovation and sustainability, Gotion aims to advance the EV industry and renewable energy sectors through cutting-edge battery solutions that not only enhance performance but also reduce carbon footprint, contributing to a greener future.

Gotion hosted its 13th Technology Conference on 17 May, during which it unveiled groundbreaking new products and technologies.

Highlights included:

* The 5C ultra-fast-charging G-Current battery.

* The high-nickel NCM cylindrical Stellary battery.

* Pioneering all-solid-state battery technology.

5C ultra-fast charging G-current battery: 80% charge in just under 10 minutes

Gotion's new G-Current battery, featuring 5C super-fast charging technology, is not just a concept but a ready-to-go solution. It can replenish 80% of its energy in just 9.8 minutes and 90% in 15 minutes.

This rapid charging capability applies to various battery applications, including Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and hybrid vehicles, and supports LFP, LMFP, and NCM chemistry systems.

Mr Cao Yong, Vice President of the Engineering R&D Institute at Gotion High-tech, said that the G-Current battery is ready for immediate mass production, marking a significant milestone in fast-charging technology and instilling confidence in its reliability and scalability. High-nickel NCM Stellary Battery: 50% cost reduction with integrated manufacturing.

80% charge in 9.8 minutes

Another highlight unveiled was the Stellary battery, utilising the Gotion High-tech's second-generation silicon-carbon material and a fast-charging electrolyte. This combination enables ultra-fast charging from 10% to 70% State of Charge in just nine minutes.

Vehicles equipped with this battery can achieve a 350km range charge in five minutes and a 600km range charge in 10 minutes. The Stellary Battery Pack features a unique structural design that dissipates 70% of heat externally within three seconds, ensuring rapid cooling under extreme conditions and preventing thermal propagation.

Additionally, the Stellary battery includes wireless Battery Management System technology and advanced cooling mechanisms, enhancing overall safety and reliability. The Stellary battery will be produced at Gotion High-tech's Gen7 factory, which employs um-level precision production, the industry's highest standard. The facility is expected to cut manufacturing costs by 50%, setting a new benchmark for cost efficiency in the battery industry.

Gemstone batteries with all-solid-state technology: energy density of 350 Wh/kg

Gotion's Gemstone battery is a game-changer with its all-solid-state technology, boasting an energy density of 350 Wh/kg—over 40% higher than conventional NCM batteries. This increase in energy density translates to extended range and improved energy efficiency for electric vehicles. Importantly, the Gemstone battery has passed the rigorous 200-degree hot box test, a significant improvement over the national standard of 130 degrees, demonstrating its enhanced safety features and reliability.

These innovations mark substantial progress in battery technology, positioning Gotion High-tech at the forefront of the industry. The company's commitment to advancing battery performance and safety continues to drive the evolution of electric vehicle technology.

If we had national leadership that was worth a damn, instead of forcing people to buy crappy EVs there would be a “man on the moon” type national priority to develop new battery technologies. Instead, just look at the surnames in this article...

They want to get rid of personal transporation. The job of EVs, is to get the ICE vehicles off the road. Then they’ll take the EVs off the road.

Too radical, people will resist. But switching to EVs is more acceptable.

In the early computer days, a five year old computer was obsolete. The same is true to EVs. An acquaintance bought an electric car years ago, and can’t sell it. Dealers won’t take it in trade. He is stuck with it. A new EV bought today will be a boat anchor in a few years.

That’s great news...until you do some rough calculation on the requirements for delivering enough power to charge EV sized batteries, in 10 min or less, for a even a small 8 spot charging station.

Each station would need the equivalent power infrastructure of a small town/city to supply that much energy that fast.

If I had money to invest, I would put a significant amount into batteries.
ANY batteries. As our technologies progress, so does our need for batteries…

Gasoline: 12,000 Wh/kg

Diesel: 12,700 Wh/kg

That's a factor of roughly 35. Even given the higher efficiency of EVs vs. ICEs, you'd still need a "200+ gallon" battery to go as far. No thanks.

Just musing about the numbers I posted earlier, I think that in the EV vs ICE efficiency game we have to add a malus to the EV:

In an ICE car as you drive along the mass m of the fuel constantly decreases so the F = m x a balance increases favorably (watch any F1 commentary!) - less force needed to accelerate the ever lighter total mass.

In an EV that 2000+ pound battery lump remains the same, no matter what the charge. (An electron weighs 511 keV/c^2 as is well known, which is fck all.)

I would grant that there are specific applications which are well-suited to EVs, but they are NOT a general solution.
