A tattooed content creator sparked a debate about hiring biases after being rejected by T.J. Maxx.
Experts said tattoos could influence hiring decisions, especially in customer-facing roles.
But overall, personality and cultural fit are more important, they said.
A TikToker, Ash Putnam, was frustrated after T.J. Maxx denied her application — and she said she thought her tattoos were to blame.
Some of her designs that are visible when she's dressed are a skull with horns on her neck, solid black patches on her arms, and a pattern on her forehead. Putnam, 23, also has multiple facial piercings, including a large silver ring hanging from her septum.
"I hate that my tattoos are such a defining factor for me getting a job or not," she said in a recent TikTok. "Just because I have tattoos doesn't mean I'm not going to be a good worker."
Putnam, from California, said she went into the store to ask why she hadn't gotten the job and that the hiring manager told her she didn't have enough experience. The hiring manager also denied that her tattoos played any role in the rejection, she said. T.J. Maxx did not respond to a request for comment.
She wasn't convinced and took to TikTok to complain. Many commentators claimed her attitude may have been to blame, rather than her tattoos. Others said they thought her body art likely played a role in the rejection.
While the jury is out over whether tattoos can damage your prospects of being hired, experts told BI that the personality of a candidate was likely more important for recruiters.

But if the person (doesn't matter which sex) interacts with customers, tats will have a definite impact on hiring.
Now a low pay backroom worker, work ethic more important than tats.
Then the experts can give her a job.
I think you’re missing a point. If she’s selling clothes to women, what men think of her tattoos is not relevant. It’s the women who are going to buy clothes from her that don’t like the tattoos that matter here.
Did she get a tattitude?
Angelina Jolie has tattoos. ♥️
She seems to feel entitled to the job. HEY! Why didn’t you hire me???? And she seems to get confrontational when she doesn’t get what she wants.
Avoid at all costs.
I know the picture isn’t Ash Putnam, but I wouldn’t hire the person in the picture to walk my dog.
Looks like she is proudly announcing that there are a variety of things wrong with her. Why does she suspect that someone noticed?
The question is would Laz hit it?
She looks like a stable individual...
Those barnyard nose rings are THE WORST.
When I someone with one of those things, I just want to tether them to a hitching post over yonder.
And being covered with tattoos and the gag inducing facial piercings means you have a personality not suited for employment and would not be a good cultural fit.
Tattoos are one thing, those horns on her forehead are demonic.
It is your responsibility to present yourself as your best, not another person’s responsibility to dig deep to find the better you.
Businesses do care how they are perceived by customers. That inckudes through workers who have direct contact with customers and represent the company.
Oh, yeah. It was those tats.
Back when I lived in Maryland, I would occasionally go to the T.J. Maxx/Home Goods in town to get something for Mom or to check out the coffee brands. The checkouts are efficient, and they’re staffed with two types of people: mostly-unmangled young women and nice older ladies. This applicant would have stood out like a sore thumb, at least.
I might just question your decision making, just a tad, a tiny little bit. As in - no, you look like you’ve monsters crawling out of you, you probably have them inside too.
Quite pretty otherwise.
I would not give this person an outward facing job. And I would not give her an inward facing job. Most of us can dress the part, for whatever the job requires. This women can’t do that. So she can go be her somewhere else. She has every right to the tattoos. But I have every right to choose someone else to hire. Possibly if I were the game designer for Doom, or some Dungeons and Dragons type game, maybe she would look the part for that job. But she would need some skill and team abilities as well.
