I've been learning to play the guitar. A Martin D-28. I've got a long way to go before I'm very good. Was wondering about other guitar players on Free Republic.

sadly, I cannot recommend Zager. Started out good, then when it began having issues, they ditched me.

"I've been learning to play the guitar."

Me too - a Seagull large-body acoustic.

Started taking lessons in February - finally got my fingertips to harden.

I've got a long way to go, too.

Wow, hard to beat a D-28 for a first guitar. Did you buy it to learn on or did it find its way to you through a family member or some such?

“A Martin D-28”

Wow, not exactly “entry level”! Don’t worry about not being very good. I’ve been playing since I was 12 and I’m still not very good. It is a most enjoyable hobby though. I am in to electric guitars, and particularly tube amplifiers, of which I have a few. WRT acoustic guitars, I always wanted to play bluegrass, but my thumb wouldn’t do the thing. Then it was Flamenco on a nylon stringed guitar that I bought in Madrid. I may have just as well have been trying to play a saxophone. There is a monthly blues jam I get to at a local pub now and then, but that is the extent of my playing out these days.

Been playing 45+ years. Currently working on a solo/duo act with my hubby when he can join. Recently discovered backing tracks and how to incorporate them for a fuller sound. Some great guitar groups on facebook. One of my faves is Solo Acoustic Musicians (SAMS), and Backing Track Users. Lots of great people and info.

" I've got a long way to go before I'm very good. "

You and me both, buddy! I tell my instructor that "I am his oldest and worst student" - but I keep at it. Arthritis is not our friend. I play a big Taylor. if "playing" is the right term.

When you get good at the guitar, you can move up to the shovel.

Having fun and having a good attitude goes a long way in playing.

You’re just learning on a Martin D-28? You’re doing it wrong. Go get a beat up Kent or old Sears acoustic like a man. Then when you can play Stairway to Heaven pretty good go back to the Martin.

Just kidding. But a D-28 will leave you disappointed with just about ever other acoustic guitar you pick up. My first guitar was a Yamaha classical with nylon strings. Easy on the fingers and the wide neck strengthens your hands.

Good luck!

Been playing 45 years. Starting to get the hang of it. Been working on lap steel and bass recently in my retirement. Total blast. Get to play in church on Sundays. I love my job.
