A new mom celebrating her first night out since the birth of her baby daughter was struck and killed after allegedly being kicked out of an Uber on a busy highway.
Vanessa Schwartz, 35, was on her way home from an evening with her husband Michael, a systems engineer, when she was hit while walking along Interstate-495 in Fairfax County, Virginia at 4am on Sunday.
Unverified Uber receipts showed that she had been dropped off by her Uber at 1am. The three-hour window is not explained.
Her devastated family have laid the blame on the Uber driver, who has been suspended amid an investigation by Uber but has not been charged, as her brother-in-law said it was a 'preventable situation.'
However, Virginia state police told NBC4 that there is 'no evidence' she was abandoned on the highway, and 'it appears she made her way to the interstate from a secondary roadway.'
Investigations into the young mother's death are still ongoing, with witnesses reportedly telling police she had 'stumbled' into traffic, reports WUSA-9.
The outlet also claimed that a preliminary investigation found the 2005 Honda Accord that struck Schwartz was unable to avoid hitting her.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
It remains unclear why Schwartz was on the highway, as NBC4 obtained unverified Uber receipts from her family that showed her ride came to an end either on the highway, or very close to it.
Although she was fatally struck at 4am, receipts also showed that the Uber lift ended at 1am. The three-hour time gap is not explained.

This story makes no sense.
It appears the husband was in the car with her. She got hit, he didn’t.
The Uber dropped them both off several hours earlier. The driver should ‘t have done so on a road, though. Why didn’t they get someone else to pick them up?
What did the husband say happened?
What a weak and transparent hit-piece on Uber.
The woman was dropped off on a residential street 3 HOURS BEFORE she wandered onto the highway.
WTF is a mother of an infant doing on the streets at 4am?
IF she was “thrown out”, why would they tip the driver?
Where’s hubby and the mysterious 3rd passenger? Why didn’t they take her home?
None of the details make any sense, and her Darwin Award death has zero to do with Uber or the driver.
One reader said they were abducted by aliens, but the husband was still being probed, when she was hit.
For all we know, she got out of the Uber because her husband and the other passenger were drunk and obnoxious...
In my experience, excessive drinking never goes well.
The receipt shows a $3 tip to the Uber driver so I’m inclined to believe they weren’t just tossed out on the side of the interstate.
Husband let her get out or get thrown out and he continued to ride? Man of the year candidate.
Your experience is correct :-)
It's horrible reporting. Like they just scraped random sentences from the web and published them. And why is the family blaming Uber when the victim was apparently abandoned by the husband, not the driver?
It sounds like a manslaughter charge to me, unless the driver can show her demanding to get out.
I’m guessing the husband wasn’t ready to come home. He should have, because a woman should not go home alone.
I’m old now, my 3 kids are grown, all my friends’ kids are grown. But I still cannot imagine my wife taking a “night out” until 4am when any of our kids were infants, or getting so blotto’d to wander onto a highway.
Is this normal in the UK? Does leaving your infant at home all night so you can get sh*t-faced an acceptable a “night out” that happens alot? I’v seen the videos of young Brits stumbling all over the place and passed out in gutters called “celebrations”, but is it really that common to be an accepted or even lauded activity?
This happened in Virginia, USA. It’s a UK news site.
Birt newspaper, my mistake, doesn’t make it any better.
This happened in the US. But where does the article say the mother was ‘sh*t-faced’, or that she intended to be out until 4 AM?
The husband did it. 😉
The baby might have been born six months ago. Did the article say?
Article says the Uber driver kicked “the couple” out of the car. Not mention of hubbie thereafter. They do not look the types, but the circumstances suggest intoxicated.
See ETCM’s post 18 - apparently there are other sources that suggest a third passenger. So, which two were kicked out?
Sounds like she was very drunk. Why didn’t her husband drive her home? Raise your hand if you are leaving your wife who just gave birth to the fortunes of an Uber driver.
