A Harris County, Texas homeowner shot and killed a man after he allegedly stole a BBQ pit from his home early Sunday morning, according to officials.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a social media post early Sunday that deputies responded to the 15000 block of Ralston Road near Kentington Oak Drive after reports that a man had been shot and was confirmed dead.
A preliminary investigation revealed the dead man allegedly attempted to steal the shooter’s BBQ pit from his home.
After discovering his grill had been stolen, the homeowner left his home and chased down the suspect in his own vehicle, Gonzalez said.
When the homeowner caught up with the man who was fleeing with the BBQ pit, just a short distance away, he confronted two individuals inside a vehicle.
The man told police he believed the driver of the suspected vehicle was possibly in possession of a weapon.
Gonzalez said the homeowner feared for his own safety and fired his own gun at the suspect, striking him.
The second person in the vehicle was not injured, the sheriff said, and has not been charged with a crime.

You might need a truck.
... shoulda taken the wife ...
You get a shovel you go over to the log fire and you start bringing shovel fulls of embers to the rack and throw down underneath the pig.
You get a nice bed of coals going under the pig and you refresh those embers as needed from the log fire 10 ft away.
Get a piece of tin roofing (tornado scrap) and you lay it on top of the pig so it captures the heat a bit.
The role of the pig is probably how the thief will spend eternity, if the Devil has any sense of humor.
“Did he get him in the brisket or ribs?”
Laughing so hard I have water squirting from my eyes. Well done, sir.
Good shoot, God bless Texas.
The author is an ignorant New Yorker that doesn’t not only know what Bar B que is but assumes a gas or charcoal grill is a BBQ pit.
Such provincial garbage is weaponized to get Trump
There isn’t any law that says one way or another, but a hot shot prosecutor is going to present it to the jury that the home owner became the aggressor when he chased the BBQ thief. I know here of two instances where it didn’t go well for someone who chased after criminals: 1. Kids toilet papered a guys house. He got in his car and began following them to see where they lived. The sped up to get away he sped up to follow. They crashed killing one. He was convicted of manslaughter. 2. Several contract workers working for GA power were at a motel. Two to a room to save money. Black guy broke in at gunpoint. And robbed them. One of the guys had a .45 under his pillow ran to the door and as the robber was climbing the fence shot at him. Robber kept going. Police came made and left. Next day more police came and found the guy dead in the woods a couple of hundred feet from the fence. Had a BB gun and had been released from prison the day prior to the robbers. The worker who shot him was charged with murder. It went to trial, it resulted in a hung jury. The guy’s lawyer was a friend of mine and found out only two of the jurors wouldn’t convict the guy. And the rest of the jury wanted to go by majority vote, but they wouldn’t do it. The prosecution decided not to retry, but the victim could have easily gone to jail for a long time.
So unless you’ve got some evidence that going after a fleeing robber is totally kosher don’t be so quick to make assumptions. Just because cops can do it doesn’t mean that you can. Remember there are two sets of laws one for us and another set for law enforcement where it is almost impossible to convict them even for blatant crimes that would put one of us under the jail.
Skip the insults they just show your intellectual deficiencies. See post 66. Personally I think thieves should hang, but that’s not the world we live in good buddy. Or haven’t you noticed that thieves are rarely prosecuted, but people who defend their frequently property are prosecuted. Wake up smell the coffee and realize you’re living in 2024 not 1870.
These kind of shootings are...rare.
It is a Black Right. It is a remedy for inequality.
Black criminals have earned the right to resist arrest and to flee. This right can not be taken from then by shooting as they flee, using batons or billy clubs to subdue while resisting or endangering the officers making the arrest.
Since shop lifting is not a crime, being subdued while resisting is the real crime.
Hey Candypants, bless your little heart.
You are wrong about Texas law. It has been discussed here many times and each time someone has to explain it. In Texas you cam immediately pursue a thief in the act, called hot pursuit, and if deadly force is the only alternative to safely retrieve your property then deadly force can be used. OTOH, you can not, say a day later, happen to see someone with your property and then pursue them to retrieve your property using deadly force.
“Chased the vehicle down - not going to end well for the homeowner.“
You can’t chase a thief and demand or take your property back? (If the thief decides to escalate then that’s on him).
I love it when some loser who disagrees with me resorts to insults. It points out their inability to support their position by facts or logic.
I sadly agree with your premise. After all wasn’t it Dr MLK who said “I dream of a future where my children are judged by the color of their skin rather than the content of their character.” Or was it the other way around?
HE FEARED FOR HIS OWN SAFETY so AFTER the grill was stolen the homeowner LEFT his home and chased down the suspect in his own vehicle.
This is murder.
NO! Not murder, it is called hot pursuit and is allowed under Texas law to retrieve your property. When the driver pulled a gun, the owner’s only alternative was to shoot and defend himself. Just because it may be against the law where you might live, doesn’t mean it is not legal in other states. Texas law is very clear on this.
I was not aware of that.
That's all I wanted you to say.
And yeah, it's not advisable to chase after robbers. It's advisable to take theft up the shorts, or let insurance pay out a pittance (where we all pay), and let hamstrung cops try to make an arrest so a bleeding heart judiciary can fawn all over the criminals. It's advisable that we give up all of our rights to the benevolent state.
" I need to know more about why this guy has a gun in my face before I shoot him" or
," I'll stand here and wait for the cops, let a jury convict this guy I just caught raping my 12 y.o. daughter".
