And yeah, it's not advisable to chase after robbers. It's advisable to take theft up the shorts, or let insurance pay out a pittance (where we all pay), and let hamstrung cops try to make an arrest so a bleeding heart judiciary can fawn all over the criminals. It's advisable that we give up all of our rights to the benevolent state.

It’s a matter of practicality. If you chase down a robber and kill him you should get a medal, but it’s more likely that you will get charged with some criminal offense ranging from manslaughter to murder depending on what jurisdiction you’re in and whether or not you have an anti-self defense zealot as a prosecutor. At the very least you’ll have to hire a lawyer which is going to cost more than a BBQ grill.
