I want one (Fury) but could afford the ammunition for it, and the average Joe cant reload its complex case.

The energy differential is pretty impressive though. Its made to cut through todays body armor.

Well that sucks hopefully the Civil War 2 starts before they can deploy it as I fully intend to take 5.56 ammo from the Miliary.

I have no clue why we are so stuck on straight side casings in this country.

I see ‘227 Fury’ in the first chart.

Is this some even newer cartridge?

I want one now.

The .277 Fury is going to end up an orphan with the Military.

The .277 Fury in the higher pressure 80,000 psi composite three piece case eats barrels. To avoid this, the Army intends to use the lower pressure (and velocity) all-brass version of the .277 Fury for training purposes.

Which means that the sighting zeros will be vastly different between the two cartridges, the recoil is vastly different, and the training received with the lower recoil .277 all brass ammo will be less useful and meaningful when it comes time to use the full power .277 composite cased ammo in battle.

As a result, the .277 Fury will end up being a specialist weapon (designated marksman, etc.) while the rest of the regular troops will continue to use weapons chambered in the 5.56 NATO cartridge.

80,000 PSI?!? How loud is that going to be? Our soldiers will need silencers just to keep from going deaf before using the first magazine.

Lots of things need to be worked out in the field. For example, moving up the chamber pressure to 80,000 + psi is going to shorten barrel life. Moving down to the brass case ammo to get lower chamber pressures to alleviate this will be fine for training, but it's enough of a different cartridge at that point that there may be a price to pay in terms of training authenticity, i.e. recoil. That may not matter for civilians. But man, that hybrid ammo is going to be expensive if and when they even do release it to civilians!

The other elephant in the room is that they'll be moving from a 6-pound rifle to a 9-pound rifle, more, of course, with the high-tech optics the military has become so fond of (and for reason). That's difficult to avoid if you're after terminal energy with reasonable recoil. But that's three (or whatever it actually turns out to be) more pounds of rifle that translates to three less pounds of other gear.

As a side note, I wish commentators would lose the silly affectation of worrying about a battle rifle penetrating too much drywall to keep the babies in the next room safe. This thing was designed to penetrate level 4 body armor at range, f'Petessake. Give it up.

Finally they come up with something which has a distinct advantage over the old 556/M4.

Many of the suggestions in the past would have cost a lot to implement but not afforded and true advantage.

This new cartridge and rifle combo does provide an advantage.

Specifically, body armor. Everyone has it today. Heck, 21 years ago in Iraq ~ 1/4 of all the Iraqi troops had it. Today if you look at Ukraine, practically every Ukrainian and Russian have advanced hard plate armor...

The old 556 was great in a world where people had no or at most soft body armor. It’s time is already past!

Next, we need to replace our 9mm. While it might be a bridge to far to expect a short barrel, small cartridge to punch through ceramics and uhmwpe, at least we should address the soft armor which can be defeated with smaller, higher velocity, better shaped, and hard/laminated type penetrating bullets, say something like FNs: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FN_Five-seven

The proliferation of more advanced body armor has changed everything.

Question: What is the need to change a basic battlefield weapon and ammunition? Have combat veterans been consulted?

Or is this another proposal from the military support industry to make millions of dollars profit re-tooling a large Army, Navy, Marine force?

The comparison is laughable. They’re about as similar as a Bowie knife and a harpoon, both of which are stabbing weapons but that’s where the similarities cease.

The 6.8 SPC was created by snake eaters to cure the limited terminal effects problem of the 5.56 round in short (<11”) barrels, and it had to be compatible with STANAG 5.56 magazines.

The 277 Fury was created to meet a future need to defeat body armor on the conventional battlefield. And they threw out all the rules and conceded it would take an entirely new platform, to include the magazines. They went to the absurd length of using an 80,000 psi round, which requires a 2-piece cartridge case with a steel case head (because brass couldn’t have withstood that much pressure). And even with melonited barrels, they probably won’t last 1000 rounds.

The criteria behind their creation were completely unrelated.

It also bears mention this author’s CV doesn’t mention anything about law enforcement or military experience, so one must question what it it that qualifies him to pontificate as to which would make the better HD/SD round.

This article is about as useful as the two cartridges. Money wasted to re-invent the 7mm Mauser or the .280 Rem/7mm-06. What a crock.

The recoil energy of the 277 is about the same as a 30.06. In a light rifle this is ridiculous. They want every troop flinching? If it’s for special uses only then there’s little reason to come up with a new cartridge at all.

Follow the money.
