'Politically... they had to do it!' RFK Jr DEFENDS his dad and JFK's spying on and wiretapping of Martin Luther King Jr during the civil rights movement - a day before the US celebrates MLK Day

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has defended his family's role in the secret government surveillance of Martin Luther King Jr.

Kennedy's comments came on the eve of the MLK Jr holiday, on a campaign stop in Atlanta.

He defended his father Robert F Kennedy and JFK for permitting the eavesdropping - calling it a necessary step amid the political tensions of the era.

The FBI began wiretapping King's home in Atlanta on November 8, 1963 - with then-AG Robert Kennedy's written approval. It remained in place until April of 1965, while another in his office stayed until June of 1966.

Some contended the probe's premise was to prove that King was a communist threat, but unsealed documents revealed it was the March on Washington a few months earlier that ruffled the Kennedy's Administration's feathers.

The 260000- strong display - and King's accompanying 'I have a dream' speech - caused the FBI to brand the civil rights leader as 'demagogic', and 'the most dangerous Negro of the future in this nation'. They went on to bill the probe an in-depth look into King's communist links, before simply spying on him instead.

Speaking to Politico, the longshot presidential candidate argued that his dad and uncle permitted the eavesdropping due to the early '60s' political climate - and thus should be looked at with some leniency.

'They were betting not only the civil rights movement but their own careers,' said Kennedy, 69.

'They knew that Hoover was out to ruin King,' he continued, referring to then FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, who, after JFK's death a few weeks after the wiretap was carried out, started directly providing Lyndon B. Johnson the information gleaned.

'There was good reason for them doing that at the time,' he said...

Wonder if these tapes will come out in 2025.
Or they are somehow “disappeared” like his uncle’s brain!

Y-you mean the DOJ and FBI was making political decisions on wiretaps, without probable cause, even back then? Has to be a new Church Commission.

Now, of course, MLK is an untouchable, sainted icon.

But back in the day MLK was talking trash about the Kennedys and Bobby Sr knew it and considered MLK “terrible,” cf. Jackie on MLK...

MLK was not a Saint. He actually was a very flawed man. Doesn’t really matter anymore. That “content of character” thing is so outdated. POC America should tear down King and build more Floyd.

They recorded MLK with hookers. The day he was shot there were 2 hookers in the motel room along with the 3 men there.

The only individual to have his own holiday. Saying that we “celebrate” this day is a bit of a push. People sleep in, watch TV etc. MLK hardly plays a role

The FBI began wiretapping King's home in Atlanta on November 8, 1963

And two weeks later, JFK is dead. Coincidence, or retaliation?

Sure raises a lot of questions, one of which is whether MLK was aware of the wiretapping. There is so much misinformation surrounding the man, with two sides mucking it up. I am open to an even-handed biography on MLK if such a thing exists.

Any time, a leftist brings up that many Founders were slave owners, or that Jefferson impregnated one of his slaves, or that Trump was an alley cat, or other Really Uncomfortable Facts about these great men, many folks on our side have a cow.

But that MLK guy, heeeeees a plagiarist and a womanizer. He’s baaaaad. Blah blah blah.

These same folks post negatively about the FBI…unless the FIB allegedly has unreleased dirt on MLK. I don’t get it. The FBI has a spotless history of defending truth, justice, and the American way. They’re beyond reproach.. There is NO WAY they’d frame anyone. (is the /sarc really necessary?)

MLK, the Founders, and Trump et al, aren’t Saints. Neither am I. And yes, there are plenty of awful folks who are black. And there are lotsa bad whites.

King was assasinated for, in general, trying to make America a better place. By way of contrast, most of us type and post on FR to Defend Liberty. Let’s be honest: in this calculation, we can’t hold a candle to MLKjr.

Will I be attending a lecture today on King? No. Will I go to a municipal celebration about MLK. Nope. I also don’t celebrate Presidents Day.

But I will feel a little better about being an American, where we work on our flaws and continue to be a great nation. I will thank God I wasn’t born in Europe or Asia etc. And I’ll thank God that His Son came for us sinners and not the Perfect Ones posting online.

Question to ponder. Who got him out of the room and on to the balcony so he would be a clear target?

Used to be George Washington had his own day, and so did Lincoln.

Neither can anyone hold a candle to George Washington, Thomas Jefferson (slave diddler that he was), Abraham Lincoln, or even Alexander Hamilton. Great men were all great despite their flaws, because their accomplishments outweigh them greatly. MLK was no different.

When somebody celebrates MLK Day, he can’t refuse to sit in the back of a bus, which now would mean nothing, or go around shaking black people’s hands, which would be just plain stupid, and he sure can’t womanize or plagiarize.

On Washington’s birthday, we used to eat cherry pie, even though the story of him with the cherry tree is pure fiction. But it was an easy observance. Lots easier than going to Mauritania and buying a slave, or on Jefferson’s birthday diddling one.

He can attend one of these celebrations, or privately say, “gosh, I’m sure glad he came along and changed the world for the better”. At this point, what difference does it make. But it is good that he came along, just as it’s good that Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Churchill came along. They enriched the world immeasurably, which is the measure of a “great man”.

Unproven that Thomas Jefferson diddled his slaves. The best DNA can do is say it’s through a male Jefferson line. Thomas Jefferson’s brother Peter was a known ‘diddler’ of slaves so far more likely it was him. This assertion regard TJ became popular when the Arkansas Diddler was in office as a way of excusing his behavior.
