‘Thanks to the 30-day return policy’: Viewers criticize woman who shared hack to getting ‘free’ Christmas tree

In a viral video, TikTokers Mason and Mai (@savingforboba), a couple known for sharing hacks with their 12,000 Followers, unveiled their latest Christmas Hack.

In the five-second video, Mai picks up an artificial Christmas Tree at a store and walking away, with a tree in hand. Text over the video reads: “Picking up my free Christmas tree thanks to the 30-day policy.”

Mason and Mai are implying that by purchasing an artificial Christmas Tree, using it, and returning it within the 30-day window of buying it, they get a free tree. By returning it within 30 days, they get their money back, thus making the tree free.

This video has 225,000 views and a hundred comments

Yes, lets encourage low class scammers to ruin liberal return policies that protect consumers. Costco has the right idea. If you abuse their return policies, your refund will include your membership fee. Many other retailers are using a third party tracker that tracks returns across multiple stores to identify abusive shoppers, and stores use this data to deny returns to people who abuse return policies, even if that abuse was at another store.

I would not be surprised, if a 7-11 clerk, had a person demanding a refund with empty beer cans.

I might return a tree this year for the first time. Once out of the box, it looked so pathetic. I was overcharged for a cheap piece of garbage, and I want my money back.

I have no interest in defending low-class mutants who play games like this, but I have long said that the business owner really bears the responsibility for adopting return policies that discourage this sort of thing.

Well alright, you did not do your proper research, personally I would contact the manufactuer, if you are unhappy.

Potential policy: if you buy Christmas stuff before Christmas, you can’t return after Christmas.

I absolutely despise and detest people who do this kind of thing.

Many years ago, we had an awesome store in my area (Lechmere’s...some of you may recognize the name) and it had the absolute best return policy. No questions asked, and even if you didn’t have the receipt, they would accommodate you.

Then, back in the Nineties, it became a thing where people would buy cameras to take on vacation with them, and return the when they came home. They would buy televisions, and return them after some big game.

Those good people went out of business because of scumbags like these.

I despise them.

I would prefer a society where scofflaws and grifters are shamed and ostracized. We have become a nation without morals, and gaming the system is applauded and promoted. “Don’t hate the playa, hate the game”. These people would have no problem stealing money if they found a wallet on the sidewalk, or keeping the money when a cashier gave them too much change.

I would rather people had good moral character.

Gee, I liked things better when people knew right from wrong and chose not to do wrong.

That is apparently in short supply in many places now.

Now, people know right from wrong, and deliberately choose wrong. And the company is at fault and needs to ruin things for everyone?

I don’t agree. Not one bit.

Proper research? On a cheap artificial tree? I just expected the thing to stand up and hold a star on top, which is something you can’t know until you take it out of the box.

I know people who abuse return policies. I’m not one of them, but I will return something that does not work.

You and me both. I don’t get this “Well the manufacturer should change”.

That is why we live in a sewer of a country now, where if the manufacturer exercises good will towards its customer base and gets screwed, it is all good with some people. A lot of people. “It’s the company’s fault for not taking a hardline approach with the customers.”

I am sick of it.

Simple solution is to not allow any returns after December 20.

“If the retailer does not like customers returning items, they can change their returns policy.”

Blaming the receiver of bad behavior isn’t an answer ,
Blame the low life thieves that commit this kind of theft.
Yes they are thieves, lock them up,

I guess they failed to see the irony of doing this on a Christmas tree. Perhaps they ought to read about the man underlying the holiday.

I agree. Social trust and good character are in short supply.

The infantalization of those of poor character continues.

Why would you say that?

I once had an engine destroy itself at 58,567 miles on a 60k warranty. I didn’t feel bad that they honored their warranty and replaced the motor.

After all - that is what I paid for. And so did he.
