Washington Post strikers criticize owner Jeff Bezos during historic walk-out: 'Needs to take accountability'

Washington Post employees and Washington-Baltimore Guild members who took part in one of the largest labor strikes in Washington Post history, criticized the leadership of the outlet’s owner, one of the world’s richest men, Jeff Bezos.

"I think that our owner has the power to take accountability for the fact that his publisher that he chose made poor business decisions that got us in this mess," Washington Post reporter and Washington Post Guild News Co-Chair Katie Mettler told Fox News Digital on Thursday.

Mettler’s comments targeted Bezos’ decision to entrust The Post to its CEO and publisher Fred Ryan, whom she accused of pushing the outlet into the financial mess that caused 750 of her colleagues to go on strike.

The strike came as the Washington Post Guild – the union for the outlet’s workers – clashed with management regarding terms for current employees, as well as terms for proposed buyouts The Post offered earlier this season as the paper implemented a 240-count job cut. The Post is facing a $100 million loss by the end of 2023, according to reports.

Fox Digital spoke to several other picketers outside the Washington Post building in Washington D.C. on Thursday who expressed how they felt about a company owned by one of the world’s richest men not being able to give what they described as a fair deal for employees.

Though some were less critical of Bezos than others, all seemed to agree that Bezos could be doing more for his employees and for the financial health of the company.

Prior to criticizing Bezos for putting Ryan – who stepped down from the role earlier this year – at the helm, Mettler admitted that Bezos "helped reinvigorate the business of the Washington Post. "I think many people are grateful for that,"...

Of course they will continue to vote Democrat. It’s like a religion to them. I still am enjoying watching the Ministry Of Truth itself on fire. May it burn down to the ground!

They still print 160,000 copies daily. They could save a lot by going all digital.

There is a large number bird cages in the DC Metro are depending on WP.

I think the WP would loose readership if that were the case. But that’s just me.

The post owns more than just the local DC paper they own papers spread far and wide around Virginia, Maryland and other areas.

Bezos is probably totally indifferent to these people. He can fire them all and restock the staff in about five days.

They are also useful for covering the tables at a Maryland crab boil.

My take on this is that WaPo is financially in dire straights ($100 million loss) resulting in 240 losing their jobs. And one of the richest men in the world is supposed to make up the difference out of his own pocket.

That’s absurd. The whiny-babies at WaPo created their own mess and they expect to be bailed out so they can continue to create a loss for Bezos?

This is typical leftist thinking.

The Washington Post was obviously a hobby for Bezos, not a serious business proposition. He ran it as a non-for-profit, like a museum or university. The Post certainly has a loyal readership, but hardly enough to support such a huge and hungry white elephant.

Time for the Washington Post staff to learn to code. Or mine coal. Or some useful and productive activity. Although the Republic will suffer from the loss of our regular doses of the wisdom of Petula Dvorak, somehow, we will manage.

Yes. The strikers want Bezos to subsidize their left wing play ground. Lose 100 million a year to spread left wing lies? Sounds like a good investment to me.

The Washington Post is obsolete.

As a business, there is not sufficient revenue generated to cover the expense. The unions imply that they should be paid out of the Bezos pocket rather than from business generated revenue.

“Big Labor” is in revolt all over. The revolt is to allow Biden to make favorable actions to insure the labor vote
