Cabelas and gun control
10/19/2023 | antidemoncrat

Cabelas lost a $2000 sale yesterday because of their inane gun control. Went to the one closest to me to purchase a thermal rifle scope that cost around $2000. When I entered the store I had my usual conceal carry pistol on me. I noticed a sign saying all weapons must be checked in at customer service. I asked if that included conceal carry and was told yes. There was one couple in front of me so I got behind them. He not only had to surrender his weapon but had to fill out a "20 questions" form. I then decide it wasn't worth it and left since I can buy the same scope om Amazon for the same price.

Here you go—similar to my experience:

“I went to Cabela’s this weekend to pick up some ammo and right when I walked in, an employee asked me if I was buying accessories for my gun (I was OCing, of course). I said no, and then he said that Cabela’s does not allow you to unholster in their store. If you want to try out different holsters, clips, etc., you give them your gun and they escort you while you shop. I told him I was just buying some ammo and that I wouldn’t unholster, and he said thanks and enjoy the store. Also, there are signs in the firearm section that states this policy that if you have a permit to carry, you cannot unholster (as opposed to not having a permit and unholstering?).”

Depends on what state you’re in. In some states, you’ve committed a crime just by walking in while packing. In mine, you’ve only committed a crime if you’re “made” and don’t leave when asked to.

I actually don’t find a request/rule not to unholster a loaded firearm (unless necessary for self-defense or the like) OK. That said, I would probably have messed with the employee a little. Would probably have asked, “So if some wacko is walking around the store shooting employees such as you and customers, I’d be breaking Cabela policy if I defended them and myself? Got it. Will leave the whacko alone.” And then might have stayed in the store to buy ammo. Well on second thought probably not...

Any idea what 20 questions were involved?

You got an ignorant employee.

My Bass Pro has the same sign, and I asked the same question, and was told it was for returning firearms or bringing them in for service.

It wasn't intended for concealed carry.

It’s been a while but I used to work the gun counter at my local Cabela’s. We had a similar sign but it was only for firearms being brought in for sale or service. Shoppers frequently wore guns openly on their hips in this deep blue state,

Maybe it’s changed.

Same here. The OP should know what the law is and act accordingly. If ignoring the sign is not a crime, walk right in. If they ask you to leave, then leave.

That makes sense. I wouldn't want to work with Joe Public un-holstering a loaded firearm either.

I don’t think Cabela’s is the same as it used to be. it was bought by Bass Pro Shops, who changed a lot of store operating policies, especially on guns, and eliminated Cabela’s old line of products in favor of Bass Pro merchandise.

Cabela’s was a great place before Bass Pro bought them out. They also screwed over the Cabela’s long term faithful employees.

As an FFL, would Cabela’s need to perform a NICS check before returning your firearm?= = =

If they put it into their Bound Book, I think so.

But I think if they have it only during that day, they can return it, no check.

But ATF is jacking around the procedure all the time, so ??????

Yep, that’s why I avoid places that have that sign in the window. Idiots are just advertising “this is a free fire zone, a potential combat zone.”

exactly. I carry everywhere, therefore, there are no gun free zones.

I guess if they had a metal detector, I’d do something else.

In the state of Washington you can ignore the signs as well. If they do somehow catch you they can tell you to leave. If you don't it is trespassing - a misdemeanor.

Although the Indian casinos in WA don't allow guns, and that is tribal law. If you are caught there the feds and the state become involved, and from what I can gather you can lose your concealed carry license.
