Encampment-overrun Denver is set to break ground on the first of many micro-communities designed to house the homeless - with 1,000 taxpayer-funded homes set to open by the end of the year.
The site, located on S. Santa Fe Drive, is one of 11 being propped up by the famously progressive city, which is currently in the midst of an unprecedented homelessness crisis.
Worsening matters is the fact the homeless are not exactly roughing it - with tent-laden processions complete with furniture and other amenities now a common sight in the Mile High City.
On Monday, the 48-year-old Democrat Mayor Mike Johnston announced the city is taking its first steps in combating the crises - by erecting a fully staffed commune with 130 70 square-foot homes, and 70 larger domiciles measuring in at 120 square feet.
Each, the mayor said, comes complete with a complementary bed and a desk, and will have access to community areas with restrooms, showers, a kitchen and multiple gathering spaces.
The residences - comprised of the increasingly popular pallet shelters now being used as 'tiny homes' - cost between $13,900 and $18,900 to construct, with each being assembled in under an hour, Johnson said.
In total, the single community will cost the city a total of $7million - not including the other amenities set to be offered. There will also be no sobriety requirement for prospective tenants, the mayor's office said Monday.
It's the first step of Johnston’s House1000 initiative, which claims it will be able to house 1,000 people by the end of 2023.
The end goal of the venture, officials said, is to eventually close all the encampments across Denver - a little over two months after Johnston declared a citywide state of emergency to address the crisis.

The little habitats should be fire-proof for those little mishaps occurring during wasted days and wasted nights.
PAR-TAY!!!!
You must be kidding....the majority of homeless are worse than PIGS...
Oh, what could possibly go wrong???
“There will also be no sobriety requirement for prospective tenants”
Maybe if it was out on the plains a way from decent people.
I say one year before they are defacated, vomited and urinated to the point of being uninhabitable, and they sue the city for being put in a biohazzard.
The accommodations were far from deluxe, but they provided a solution for many people. And then progressive city governments decided that cheap hotels were bad because they housed alcoholics, drug addicts, poor people, and people who could not manage to get other kinds of housing.
So the cities pushed the SRO hotels out of business, and wrote regulations to prevent anyone from opening a new one.
And now the city is going to build the same thing, but much less efficiently, and without the management process that made SRO hotels work.
Drug Dens and Rape Rooms. We hear ya, Denver!
Build a Third World Facility and they will come. *SPIT*
Most conventional hotel rooms are well over $200/night.
When traveling, all I need is a place to sleep and take a shower. I can even do without the "free" breakfast of powdered eggs and microwaved bacon.
Well, “worse than pigs” is a bit over the top, but to some degree I resonate with the sentiment.
What troubles me is that “conservatives” preach that all people yearn to be free and independent, and here we have people who yearn to enslave themselves!
Are they flammable? Where are the fire sprinklers?
LOL! Soon to have all copper stripped out, appliances sold on Facebook, be chopped apart for firewood, then the rest will be burned down by cooking fires.
Pinkos are so stupid.
But, but, did all of the future ‘guests’ read the very fine print? It states, in no uncertain terms, that ALL mental health problems need to be left outside the ‘community.’ Any and all ranting, raving, self-medicating needs to absolutely take place outside the ‘community’ between the hours of 8am to 5pm. Between 5pm and 8am, you will be expected to act like a regular person. (Do I need to put the /s sign?)
Wait until Denver gets one of their typical 12-15” snow storms or blizzards accompanied by 50-60 mph winds…
In all seriousness, we don’t have a homelessness problem so much as we have a “self medicating” mentally ill vagrant problem in the US of A.
I’m making a bet that they will not stay in those “houses”. Too easy for them to think we need only to put up fencing and have them trapped. Just saying. We will see how the winder goes.
Exactly.
One problem with homeless encampments is that they often catch fire and burn down.
