When you create a stupid system, don’t be surprised when people exploit it. And that’s exactly what happened over the weekend when a conference for women in tech was swamped by men who registered under the guise of “non-binary.”
The Grace Hopper Celebration is an annual conference and career fair designed to “bring the research and career interests of women in computing to the forefront.” But this year, droves of men descended on the Orlando event with résumés in hand. And some reportedly even cut lines and shoved women out of the way to submit those résumés to potential employers.
Female attendees expressed their frustration on social media.
“These men are acting like zoo animals, sprinting to the booths, and physically hurting some of the attendees,” one person wrote.

Good. If anyone can be a woman, expect the system to be gamed.
You have done well, Grace Hopper...................
Grace Hopper. There’s a name that jars memory. She gave a lecture at the Naval Academy when I was a midshipman on computing. She was an admiral already, the first woman admiral if I recall correctly. She handed out ‘nano-seconds’, a little piece of bell wire about 12” long, the distance light travels in a nano-second. This was to help illustrate how the speed of computing had improved over the years. This was in the very early 80’s. Today she would have to hand out pico-seconds, which would probably look like dust.
Good one!
You will always have insurmountable problems once you move away from hiring the most qualified.
I saw actual video from this event. It was 95% women. This is Outkick trolling for clicks. “Overrun” indeed. Nonsense.
She’s one of my heroes.
Wasn’t she the inventer of COBOL?
DID SHE JUST MISGENDER THEM????
To some types calling themselves women nowadays (and, I am not talking about trannies) having one actual man in the midst of 1000 women is overrun. They are the “delicate” types who see themselves only a victims of everything in the world.
I can remember when female reporters were fighting to get in to men’s locker rooms to get post-game interviews. This is funny.
I met Admiral Grace Hopper in 1985 at a private Pentagon computer-communications lecture (actually at the DIAC on Bolling AFB—see my profile). She gave me (and everyone) a piece of 24 gauge wire about 12 inches long.
That, she said, was the distance an electrical signal traveled in a nanosecond.
I still have it in my Nerd Shrine.
It is pretty dammed funny and the organizers need to come up with something, but I suspect they will not be able to while remaining “inclusive”.
The organizers cooked up this situation, but the response from a company I own to a resume a dude gave my recruiter at this conference?
“Thank you for going to the trouble to reveal yourself as selfish oaf of a doucehbag with no sense of boundaries or decorum! Your resume is going into the “Never Hire Under Any Circumstance” pile and I’ll be sharing with all of my CEO buddies how I came to know about you. Buh bye...”
sounds like it was foreign men, Asian?
I remember her interview on Sixty Minutes many years ago.
She was at times very serios but at other times very funny.
HA HAHAHHa HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!
That’s good!!!!
“It got so bad, though, the organization’s chief impact officer stood up at the conference to explain that some registrants had lied about their gender identity, “
What a bigot hate filled transphobe.
See post 4, nerd! ;)
