A restaurant fired back at New York Times columnist David Brooks after he complained Wednesday on social media about the cost of his meal, saying, "This is why Americans think the economy is terrible."
"This meal just cost me $78 at Newark Airport. This is why Americans think the economy is terrible," Brooks wrote with a picture of his dinner, which consisted of a cheeseburger, fries and what appears to be an alcoholic beverage.
However, the restaurant 1911 Smoke House Barbeque pushed back on Brooks' post on Facebook Thursday.
"Looks like someone was knocking back some serious drinks - Bar tab was almost 80% and he's complaining about the cost of his meal," it wrote. "Keep drinking buddy - we get paid off everything."
Brook's post went viral on X, formerly known as Twitter, receiving more than 20 million views in under 24 hours. Many who commented on the post mocked the New York Times columnist.
Co-host of "Breaking Points" Saagar Enjeti said, "Brooks inadvertently proving an important point. If you stop drinking alcohol you can save yourself a lot money!"
Conservative author Carmine Sabia asked, "Alexa, what is an elitist?"
"You voted for Biden. Chow down," conservative actor Nick Searcy wrote.
Author Joyce Carol Oates also mocked Brooks, posting, "(bar bill: $66. food bill: $12. tip: $0 N Y Times expense account)."

I’m wondering if Mr. Brooks has an expense account, and if so, did he use it to pay for lunch. His boss might not like that 80% of the bill was alcohol.
Maybe that’s why he wrote about the bill publicly, not expecting the restaurant to defend itself.
More dishonest journalism, regardless.
Thanks for fighting back, Airport Restaurant.
On the other hand, a Newark restaurant probably thinks D. Brooks really is a Conservative, so their motive might have been politically evil.
I’ve been teaching myself how to cook now for 40+ years and so far, I know I’ve saved a ton of money. Buying what’s on sale is another cheap thrill of mine and I have to laugh as I drive past the drive-thru lines of so many fast food joints. Plus, my home-cooked leftovers are much better than any fast food leftovers. I won’t brag about my pizza though, because I know enough not to try copying the local greats such as Jets, Buddy’s, Louie’s, Green Lantern or Renshaw’s. That’s my one carry-out meal or meals...And even then I must have a coupon that gets me at least 10% off my entire bill.
How I save money:
Go to fast food joint.
Look in the back to see who is making the food.
Go home and make a PBJ.
I don’t know about you, I usually lose my appetite when I see who works at these places.
like going to a theatre where popcorn is $15 a bucket.
Re: The ironic thing is that David Brooks wrote “The Real Anita Hill”
Whoops!
David Brock (not Brooks) wrote the Anita Hill book.
Brock was a Conservative gay investigative reporter who flipped over to the Hard Left, and never looked back.
Brooks is the guy who pretends to be a Conservative on PBS and as a columnist at the New York Times.
Entitlement mentality is infesting and infecting our nation far too much.
What this country needs is a time of serious, real life hardship to get people focused back on what is really important, sad to say. The soft, pampered life only leads to whiny crybabies who think everyone owes them everything they want.
That was my thought. For airport food, it’s a pretty good deal.
I think we all can pretty much assume he did NOT vote for Trump. Everything was much more reasonable under PDJT. And he has the nerve to whine about prices under Bidenomics.
Chili’s in So Cal has a “three for me” Special. Non alcoholic drink, Burger, Fries and Soup or Salad. $10.99. Highly recommended. They have other entrees if a burger doesn’t sound good for a few bucks more.
Love it!
No tip. Typical liberal/elitist.
I had an awesome steak at Capital Grill the other day. With iced tea.
My total was probably not much more than $78
He’s not wrong, though.
The price of eating out has gone absolutely goofy.
The “99-cent menu” at McDonald’s is now called the “$1-$2-$3” menu, but most of the items on it are more than $3. Whoppers at Burger King cost what sit-down restaurants charged before coronavirus. $8 sit-down meals now cost $20.
Nice to see a leftist who probably voted for Cho Bi-Dung getting hammered by BiDungNomics. Enjoy the suck on your wallet, a$$whole.
Unfortunately we are all hearing that sucking noise from our wallet. I usually get a What-A-Burger about once a week and have noticed that the price for my typical order has literally doubled in the last 2 years.
No, thank you.
The last time the USA had real life hardship we got The Great Depression, Franklin Roosevelt, The New Deal, and World War Two!
Brooks is a jerk no doubt. But how rich it would it have been if this had happened to the “Economist” of record Paul Krugman. What a loathsome creature he is.
Yeah. He's a grade A prick:
The $66 is probably for 3 double cocktails. A double is usually about $20.
