Large amounts of sedentary time linked with higher risk of dementia in older adults, study shows
Medical Xpress / University of Southern California / JAMA ^ | Sept. 12, 2023 | Raichlen et al

Adults aged 60 and older who spend more time engaging in sedentary behaviors like sitting while watching TV or driving may be at increased risk of developing dementia, according to a new study.

Their study showed the risk of dementia significantly increases among adults who spend over 10 hours a day engaging in sedentary behaviors like sitting—a notable finding considering the average American is sedentary for about 9.5 hours each day.

The study also revealed the way sedentary behavior is accumulated over the course of the day didn't matter as much as the total time spent sedentary each day.

As part of a U.K. Biobank sub-study, adults agreed to wear accelerometers. The researchers focused on a sample of approximately 50,000 adults from this sub-study over the age of 60 who did not have a diagnosis of dementia at the start of the study.

After an average of six years of follow-up, the researchers used inpatient hospital records and death registry data to determine dementia diagnosis. They found 414 cases positive for dementia.

Then, the team adjusted their statistical analysis for certain demographics that could affect brain health.

While high amounts of sedentary behavior were linked with increased risk of dementia, the researchers found that there were certain amounts of sedentary behavior that were not associated with dementia.

"We were surprised to find that the risk of dementia begins to rapidly increase after 10 hours spent sedentary each day," said Gene Alexander.

"This suggests that it is the total time spent sedentary that drove the relationship between sedentary behavior and dementia risk, but importantly lower levels of sedentary behavior, up to around 10 hours, were not associated with increased risk."

More research is needed to establish causality and whether physical activity can mitigate the risk of developing dementia, the authors said.

I guess my mom should be a drooling basket case by now. Just turned 99 and her mind is scary sharp. She never was super active.

How does FR fit into this? Asking for a friend.

Right. It seems that these medical reports are taking up increasing amounts of space on FR. Also asking for a friend.

All anyone has to do is publish one study and it becomes fact.

LOL

“sitting while watching TV or driving”... Other than driving and watching TV, is there something else that seniors can do?

Seriously! You drive to Dunkin, then you get your doughnuts and watch the Price is Right... Then take a nap... Wake up and then you drive to the liquor store and get your 6 pack of beer, by the time you get back it’s time for Jeopardy... If it’s a Saturday you might even go to a Red Lobster or Olive Garden. If you happen to live next door to a doughnut shop, a liquor store or an Olive Garden then maybe you’ll get some of that much needed exercise.

Here’s the deal when it comes to dementia... If you’re lucky, you’ll live long enough to eventually get it. The good news... You’ll be the only one who doesn’t know it.

My favorite is Banff and Jasper. Waterton burned seven years ago. Seems
like 90%. My wife liked the Prince of Wales hotel.

One of the things I like about my country place is having no car. I have to walk about 5 miles round trip and pack in my food.

I call it Recliner Dementia. I’ve noticed a link between recliners and health problems

“Waterton burned seven years ago. Seems like 90%.”
I didn’t know that. We drove through enough burned areas.

“My wife liked the Prince of Wales hotel.”
We have reservations there.

The town of Banff was quite crowded and I hate city crowds. We took the #2 bus to the Bow River and hiked the Bow River Trail toward the Hoodoos. Before long, we were in wilderness forest and began thinking “I wish we had our bear spray.” But we came across a few mtn bikers and hikers, so that allayed that fear.

We really enjoyed Lake Meligne east of Jasper. We drove up without boat tour reservations and they were all booked up, so we rented a canoe and passed the lake for an hour. It was absolutely spectacular.

We also stayed at Revelstoke. We were very surprised to find out it is a famous ski area for experts as we’d never heard of it. We are FAR from experts.

We re-visited Whistler wher our daughter had previously lived for several years. I’m no fan of ski resorts, but the trams get you into the mountains quickly and the trails on Blackcomb Mtn didn’t have many people.

So even if you exercise 2 hours a day and sleep for 8 hours, there are still 4.5 hours left that you have to be moving in order to avoid the 10 hour/day dementia threshold?

Yea, I meant Banff National Park, not the town. Same experience. Like Aspen. We always stayed up by Lake Louise or Jasper. We have hiked at Glacier twice and have come across grizzly bears three times. They seem to ignore you as long as you stay back 50 yards or so. I never carry bear spray. I figure if God wanted me to be mauled by a bear to end my life here, then so be it.

We splurged and stayed at the Fairmont Resort in Jasper. Now that was a NICE place! It’s our new favorite place to stay — secluded, private, spacious and pristine. It drains your bank account quickly, though. But we are at the point where either we use it now or the kids get it...guess who won?
