Adults aged 60 and older who spend more time engaging in sedentary behaviors like sitting while watching TV or driving may be at increased risk of developing dementia, according to a new study.
Their study showed the risk of dementia significantly increases among adults who spend over 10 hours a day engaging in sedentary behaviors like sitting—a notable finding considering the average American is sedentary for about 9.5 hours each day.
The study also revealed the way sedentary behavior is accumulated over the course of the day didn't matter as much as the total time spent sedentary each day.
As part of a U.K. Biobank sub-study, adults agreed to wear accelerometers. The researchers focused on a sample of approximately 50,000 adults from this sub-study over the age of 60 who did not have a diagnosis of dementia at the start of the study.
After an average of six years of follow-up, the researchers used inpatient hospital records and death registry data to determine dementia diagnosis. They found 414 cases positive for dementia.
Then, the team adjusted their statistical analysis for certain demographics that could affect brain health.
While high amounts of sedentary behavior were linked with increased risk of dementia, the researchers found that there were certain amounts of sedentary behavior that were not associated with dementia.
"We were surprised to find that the risk of dementia begins to rapidly increase after 10 hours spent sedentary each day," said Gene Alexander.
"This suggests that it is the total time spent sedentary that drove the relationship between sedentary behavior and dementia risk, but importantly lower levels of sedentary behavior, up to around 10 hours, were not associated with increased risk."
More research is needed to establish causality and whether physical activity can mitigate the risk of developing dementia, the authors said.

Yes, many are at risk. Get your 10,000 steps in every day, and you will help yourself ward off poor health, in one way or another.
(This 70 something is running a 5K this weekend, no sedentary lifestyle here.)
My wife and I walk and hike a lot. She plays a lot of pickleball. We just got back from an 11 day trip through Western Canada and hiked six days a total 30 miles and a total elevation gain over 5,000 feet. Not bad for a pair of 72 year old farts. We rarely pass people on the trails these days, but slow and steady wins the (dementia) race.
How does FR fit into this? Asking for a friend.
It helps keep you crusty.
Great trip and great hiking! Keep it up!
I’m averaging over 3.5 miles every day for about 2 years now. Works for me. The doctor says I don’t look anywhere near my age. Younger than you, but old enough to care about my health. I consider that one of the only benefits for us from the scamdemic.
Explains Biden. All that time spent in his basement has fried his brain
We did about the same thing in six days at Waterton, Glacier, and Yellowstone last week. 40 miles and 7,000’. Being a flatlander doesn’t help.
Evening tailout in the canyon waters. Big swirl where my fly should be, no fish. Old Washington Steelhead Flyfishers trick I was taught: Reel in four feet, try again ... no fish. Strip out four feet try again, and Boom, FISH ON! Of about 25 fish I’ve landed on the Deschutes, this 9 lb. red-striped wild buck was the biggest.
62 this week. Retired, kickin a$$ and taking names.
This 89.8 something is going up & down a 15-step staircase 26-to-32 (as counted with a hand-clicker) times a day going from my computer room down to the kitchen, living room where wife watches TV, or even 14-steps further down to the laundry room, my youngest (60) son's rooms, or garage, no sedentary lifestyle here. When your wife has had a knee implant (about 15 years ago), the honey-do list is long and arduous...
Dumb Bunny!
Just a few days ago, I could swear that I read an article here, on FR saying that a lifestyle routine of heavy physical activity, could make someone more susceptible to Alzheimer’s.
I could barely believe what I was reading wasn’t meant to be satire. This was about three or four days ago.
Not sure what to believe now.
As I am working at my computer (remotely) from 9:00 to 5:00, I guess I am doomed.
We were in Glacier last year. Have reservations at Watertown next year and a return to Jasper, Lake Louise, and Banff. Nothing like the mountain west for outdoors!
>> How does FR fit into this?
You already asked us that! You don’t remember??
