NASA scientists have predicted there is a chance that a massive asteroid they have been tracking could smash into earth in the year 2182, potentially devastating an area the size of Texas.
Bennu, a Near-Earth Object (NEO), orbits the earth roughly every six years and has been on the space agency’s radar since 1999 when it was first discovered.
There have been three close encounters involving Bennu in 1999, 2005, and 2011, scientists said.
On September 25, 2135, Bennu will make a close fly-by past Earth and has a miniscule chance through a pass through a “gravitational keyhole” that would send the space rock on a collision course for the planet in 2182 — 159 years from now.
A paper from the OSIRIS-REx science team gives Bennu just a 1 in 2,700 chance — or 0.037% — of impacting Earth on.....

Some think the one headed here in 2029 might hit.
So we just land a few big rocket engines on it and thrust away from the earth. A little push over many years of low gravity flight should steer it away.
Yet the few hundred million dollars would take away payments to millions of refugees changing our voting demographics, or HIMARS new model missiles to kill Russians, or new gold plated swimming pools to a few deep staters etc.
So it won’t happen.
well I for one am not sticking around!
If we get rid of fossil fuels will that help slow it down?
Why do they have to tease us like that?
The headline will read “Asteroid To Hit The Earth, Minorities To Be Hit The Hardest!”
If Bennu, why he not tell us?
It used to be"Women and Minorities Hit Hardest", but now scientists and politicians don't know what the former are anymore.
Why worry about the asteroid? The earth will be burned up by global warming long, long before that.
I’m rooting for the asteroid.
We might be so advanced in 159 years that we might lasso the asteroid and build an LGBTQ resort on it. We might redirect its path and jump onto it like an escape pod to run away from the transhuman/transexual hell we have created on this planet.
Or we might have already blown the planet to smithereens.
Gonna hurt.
We’ll all be dead in 7 years from climate change anyway so a non issue. Maybe the asteroid will start the lifecycle over again.
Do they mean it would leave a crater that size? Or would it be a meteor the size of a refrigerator that would raise a dust cloud the size of Texas?
Not that I'd be around but details matter!
Well’ according to AOC, Mankind will all be long gone (7.37 yrs left) from Climate Change. No need to worry /s
The asteroid should visit DC.
Is it too early to start panicking?
Might as well get cremated after
my passing. This thing, if it
hits, will turn everything to
ash anyway.
If it hits Baltimore, it will cause millions of dollars worth of improvements.
