So we just land a few big rocket engines on it and thrust away from the earth. A little push over many years of low gravity flight should steer it away.
Yet the few hundred million dollars would take away payments to millions of refugees changing our voting demographics, or HIMARS new model missiles to kill Russians, or new gold plated swimming pools to a few deep staters etc.
So it won’t happen.

Why worry about the asteroid? The earth will be burned up by global warming long, long before that.

If we take a look at the last 100 years of technological development and extrapolate it out 159 years, we can barely imagine what human life will be like. We are advancing at an exponential rate.
We might be so advanced in 159 years that we might lasso the asteroid and build an LGBTQ resort on it. We might redirect its path and jump onto it like an escape pod to run away from the transhuman/transexual hell we have created on this planet.
Or we might have already blown the planet to smithereens.

We’ll all be dead in 7 years from climate change anyway so a non issue. Maybe the asteroid will start the lifecycle over again.

"... devastating an area the size of Texas".Do they mean it would leave a crater that size? Or would it be a meteor the size of a refrigerator that would raise a dust cloud the size of Texas?
Not that I'd be around but details matter!

We did some will and trust work recently and the question came up as to whether to bury or scatter our ashes. I guess they’re gonna be scattered regardless….
