SANTA FE — A wandering bull moose was captured in downtown Santa Fe and relocated to a suitable habitat in northern New Mexico, authorities said Tuesday.
State Game and Fish officials and Animal Service Officers for the city said the moose was spotted around 8 a.m. near Fort Marcy Park.
Officers set up a perimeter to protect residents and pedestrians in the park, which is a popular walking area.
The moose was sedated with a tranquilizer dart and loaded onto a trailer before being evaluated by a state Department of Game and Fish veterinarian and determined to be in good health.
Department biologists estimate the moose weighed over 900 pounds and was 4 to 5 years old.

Found wandering near Ft Marcy Park . . . very suspicious.

He felt safe in NM knowing that guns are now banned ;-)
Hope it didn't land on anybody.
Near Fort Marcy Park? I’m surprised that the moose didn’t commit Arkancide.
I would think that New Mexico would be well to the south of the habitat for moose.
No, but Zozobra was burned at the stake there ten days ago:
A whole lot of NM is above 7000 ft. And cold and snowy.
Moose could probably survive in the mountains of New Mexico, but I didn’t think they ranged much farther south than the Wyoming-Colorado line.
They wander down from Colorado. This one was especially far south though. Down in Southern NM we’ve had Jaguar sightings. That’s diversity for ya.
My thought as well. Just got.back from there on Saturday, sure did not look like moose territory to me.
Shouda turned it into moose meat. Cheaper. If you seen one moose you’ve seen em’ all.
Trying to find the Governor’s Mansion! Knew it would be safe there.
Small, but stable, population in southern Colorado. Toung bulls wonder down fairly frequently.
So do I - maybe they are migrating south because of global warming…
I ride my moose into town and tie him to a hitching post (like any law abiding citizen would do) and come to find him gone! Moose snatched. Some days I just don’t feel like biting my way out of the restraints anymore.
“I would think that New Mexico would be well to the south of the habitat for moose.”
Well NM does have squirrel, so there’s that.
