NYC man killed ‘instantly’ when Peloton bike toppled over and severed neck artery: suit

A New York City man was killed “instantly” when his Peloton exercise bike toppled over and severed an artery in his neck in the middle of a home workout, his mother alleged in a newly reported lawsuit.

Ryan Furtado,32,was found dead by cops in his downtown Brooklyn apartment on Jan. 13, 2022, according to the suit filed in Kings County Supreme Court.

Furtado’s mom alleges that the exercise giant instructs riders to “use the bike for stretching” during its classes — but that “applying pressure on the bike in a pulling and pushing fashion” causes the equipment to “destabilize and fall,” according to the filing.

Further, the suit alleges that Peloton failed to adequately warn riders that pulling themselves up from the floor mid-workout would increase “an unknown risk of injury to the user, such as the case with Ryan.”

“There is only one warning label on the Subject Bike located on the front, right, leg when there should have been more labels attached to the stem and base to adequately warn the user of injury that could occur if the Subject Bike is used to pull oneself up from the floor during a workout,” the filing states. Furtado had been completing one of the exercise giant’s “Core” workouts at the time, which required him to get off the bike to conduct exercises on the floor, claim the court documents filed by his mom, Johanna Furtado.

“When rising from those exercises, Ryan used the bike to assist him in getting up,” the filing states.

“The bike spun around and impacted him on his neck and face severing his carotid artery in his neck killing him instantly.”

When NYPD cops found him, the bike was “still resting on his neck and face,” states the suit, which was filed quietly in March.

Not if they told users to use the bike for stretching. Sounds like there’s some liability.

Wow. That is horrible. What a pity. Prayers up for that person.

Guess I’ll just stay home with my “power bands”, keep riding my bike and taking evening walks. Fitness equipment appears to be an high risk endeavor.

But, as Columbo figured out, he was actually electrocuted with a mixer dropped into his bath with him in it.

That's not a flaw that's a freak accident-—sad-—RIP.

I don't agree at all.   Peloton attempts to sucker customers into thinking they are the Swiss Army Knife of exercise equipment.   Stopping a bike exercise to do floor exercises, then resuming the bike exercises is what directly caused the freak accident.   This was totally negligent homicide by Peloton.

I never heard of a stationary bike manufacturer that would tell customers to do stretching exercises while on the bike.   Yeah, go ahead and move your center of gravity beyond the limit of physics./s   That is another invitation to disaster.

I think I had heard Rush talk about how Reid got that black eye , Rush said that Reid’s brother punched him at a New years eve party.

Reid did sue. He never specified what color the exercise strap was as various colors were offered as I understand it.

When he was three, my son figured out how to climb up a tall dresser by pulling the drawers out stepwise to form a staircase. Fortunately, he didn’t weigh enough to tip it over, but when we saw it, I did a little demonstration by putting my weight on the bottom step and getting it to start tipping - he never tried it again so I guess he learned.
