A RISING football star has died suddenly at the age of 16. Samara Whitney played for Australia's Wynyard Football Club in Tasmania.
She has been described as a "pocket rocket" on the field in emotional tributes. Samara, who was part of the AFL's Tasmania Devils program, died on Tuesday. Her cause of death has not been revealed.
Wynyard FC said: "[Samara was] a vibrant & loveable young lady who has made her mark at the WFC as a passionate and talented player, who had a big future ahead of her. “Our young gun, our pocket rocket, our number 2 … such a positive influence for all. Someone who had a great connection with both our club and the wider community. This will last forever.

True, but I will say that in all of my years following sports, I have never seen or heard of so many deaths in highly functioning young athletes. The increase in deaths is concerning. Maybe communication is better, maybe more people are involved in competitive athleticism, maybe drug use in athletes is higher than in the past...but this is strange....something is happening...may not be explained by the same old reasons
I know of four or five instances of soccer players literally dropping dead on the field long before COVID.
Do you think it is being reported more?:Were most of the reports before reporting on non-athletic subjects? Or people with known cardiovascular disorder?

I am not impugning your report, but when I was playing (or at least attempting to play) football...if someone died somewhere who was a football athlete, everyone knew about it. There were very few deaths reported...everyone who went thru two a day practices (hell week) or through the well known preseason brutal practices of Bear Bryant would have seen lots of death...if it was so common...so in my mind,,, something needs to be looked into...with no prejudice..
