Experts have warned that the dark region, which is cooler than the surrounding area, could release energetic explosions capable of knocking out our planet's power grids.
The exact measurements of the sunspot are unknown, but NASA's Perseverance rover snapped images of the spot as it sits more than 152 million miles from the sun.
The rover observed the sunspot on August 17 through August 20 while exploring the Jezero Crater on the Red Planet.

You didn’t get the reference. BS = Bob Seger. Sunspot Baby was one of his hits. đ
It’s the end of the world, again. If the power grid gets knocked out it was man made.
Yes. We do.
Interesting. Mars is pretty much behind the Sun at this point in its orbit so the Mars rover is looking at the back side of the Sun from our perspective and seeing a sunspot that will rotate around into our view in a few days. The Sun takes about 25-26 days to rotate. I recall that in 2012 there was a very large CME event similar to the dreaded Carrington event of 1859 (that would fry our modern electronics as it did the primitive telegraph system then operating). Luckily for us, the 2012 CME was pointed at right angles to the Sun-earth line and went off harmlessly into a different part of the solar system.
If we lose internet, phone me and I will rant incoherently over the phone to you, so you won’t totally lose the experience of the internet. I will mention things like Putin’s good or bad points and how Zelensky is a very brave man or a globohomo tyrant. Your choice. $3.98 a minute.
Oh wait the telephone won’t work either. Oh well.
If Hunter Biden gets paid enough, the sunspot will go away.
With of course 10% for the big guy.
Chances are that this one will miss us. Of course at some point a major solar storm will hit and we will be in the path.
It is just math.
Just get under a desk. That will protect you from anything.
It’s entirely possible for a huge solar EMP event to knock us back to the perverbial stone age. The “newer” the electrical components, the more fragile they are...circuit boards and such and everything contains them now. Unless “hardened,” such as the military does to protect against EMP pulses.
But since the solar ejection must be pointed at just the right trajectory to intercept the earth, the likelihood is low. But still far greater than getting smacked by a killer asteroid.
And if it doesnât, they will love it.
I got my novice license in June 78, my general class in November of 78, and my advanced class license in February of 79. I never got the extra class, because I didnât like Morse Code. I used to talk to people all over the world, till 1994. I got totally burned out on it, and promptly went off the air, and never came back on. I probably should not have let my license expire, but even if I still had it, I wouldnât get back on the air. I just got burned out.
It’s Trump’s fault!
“...the CME will probably be pointed away from us when it does.”
True, BUT...if it blows in our direction...
You can always tell a Daily Mail headline, by that breathless ALL CAPS FREAKOUT PANIC! word that ends it.

LOL
#24 The martians should be able to see the 2nd Earth on the far side of the sun....
Ready for whatever happens ping.
I wouldn't write it off.
Solar activity caused problems in Montreal many years ago.
Could make for a nice aurora though, if it's not cloudy out.
Nope. Just turn off all your circuit breakers except the one for you EV charger. Only things connected to long wires would be affected. Power, cable, Old copper landlines.
The worst part is that the same people who brought us covid could create a fake sunspot EMP story and use it as a trick to shut everything down. So if you suddenly find yourself in the dark with no communications then just think about that.
