Large study shows link between vitamin D and psoriasis severity

More than eight million people in the U.S. experience psoriasis, a condition in which skin cells build up and form itchy dry patches. A person's vitamin D levels could play an important role in psoriasis severity, according to one of the largest studies to date.

The analysis, which included almost 500 psoriasis cases from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), showed a linear relationship between increasing psoriasis severity and decreasing vitamin D levels measured through blood tests.

"Topical synthetic vitamin D creams are emerging as new therapies for psoriasis, but these usually require a doctor's prescription," said Rachel K. Lim. "Our results suggest that a vitamin D-rich diet or oral vitamin D supplementation may also provide some benefit to psoriasis patients."

Vitamin D is thought to influence the development of skin diseases by affecting the body's immune response and through direct effects on the cells involved in skin repair.

"With growing public interest in vitamin supplementation, we wanted to further examine the connection between vitamin D levels and psoriasis severity," said Cho.

For the new study, the researchers identified 491 psoriasis cases from more than 40,000 NHANES participants, with 162 cases from 2003–2006 and 329 from 2011–2014. They also extracted data on vitamin D levels, self-reported psoriasis-affected body surface area and other factors including age, gender, race, body mass index, and smoking status.

After adjusting for lifestyle factors such as smoking, the analysis showed that lower vitamin D levels and vitamin D deficiency were significantly associated with greater psoriasis severity. The researchers also found that patients with the least amount of body surface affected by psoriasis had the highest average vitamin D levels while those with the greatest affected area had the lowest average levels of vitamin D.

Vitamin D levels mapped very closely with psoriasis. People with more psoriasis had less Vitamin D in their blood.

It looks likely Vitamin D could curb, or at least prevent, worse psoriasis, however, it is possible psoriasis saps the Vitamin D out of the body, as well.

Either way, get your levels checked and supplement, if needed.

I have psoriasis.
Have had active psoriatic arthritis.

Vitamin D is sooo important for treatment.
Sunshine is the best remedy, as it assists in the body’s production of vitamin D.
Active psoriatic arthritis is absolutely the worst thing that you can imagine.

The Vitamin D song (tune “Girl from Iphenema”)

“D d-D d-D d-D-Dee-d
D d-D d-D d-D-Dee-d
D d-D d-D d-D-Dee-d
Deeeeeeeeeeeeeeee”

(at least it’s better for you than Baby Shark)

Good info, thanks. I’d bet a random testing of 100 people would show the large majority to be vitamin D deficient. Especially those living up North.

How does psoriatic arthritis differ from other kinds, and how was it diagnosed?

The other natural substance that has been shown to benefit psoriasis is nigella sativa (black cumin).

The drug low-dose natrexone is good for all auto-immune diseases; but it is not yet FDA approved in low dose, and so not yet covered by medicare part D.

i have cured my psoriasis. Important to note this is likely temporary and I did not have it all over my body.

I have a genetic predisposition to a Vitamin D issue and my D is usually low when tested. I periodically take Vitamin D but not on a consistent basis because I have so many jacked up rare genes that affect metabolism that Doctors have no clue how they are interacting.

I can’t tell you exactly what has cured this but I suspect it is either the Red Light from Mito ( I don’t use every day) but more likely the reason is low dose naltrexone. I have had to go off LDN for the moment and the psoriasis has not come back after several weeks.

I am completely shocked that psoriasis I have had for more than 10 years disappeared. I wish I could give you a conclusive answer as to why it happened but I can’t.

I’m not a doctor, but I did sleep at a holiday inn express..lol

Anyway psoriatic arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are virtually identical.
Psoriatic arthritis is missing one marker.
So, if you have arthritis, but the blood work is missing a marker, and you have psoriasis....
Bingo
Psoriatic is either active or not active.
I’ve been in “remission”.. meaning not active, for about 10 years now.

also, I bought an Oura ring to monitor my situation as I try to figure out how to fix my dysfunction. It is showing my HRV is very low...meaning my flight or flight ANS is dominating. I suspect this is not new but I don’t know how LDN will effect that yet.

It would seem like psoriasis should cause you to have a dysfunction in the balance of the ANS . Since I still have a major dysfunction it is hard to say why the heck my psoriasis disappeared.

My solution is simply to spend plenty of time outdoors. Fortunately it is easy where I live.

LDN is so dirt cheap that it doesnt really matter that Medicare doesn’t cover it. 1 50 mg pill lasts awhile depending on how small a dose you take. The problem is finding a Doctor who will prescribe it.

My Rheum. Dr. won’t because he says there is not enough evidence that it works. So I had to go about getting it for weight loss. However, I cant get a compounding prescription so I have to chop it up and very hard to get it small enough. I think it caused me a problem because my dosing was too high. I need smaller pieces

I am going to try it in water when I start it again.

And useless for making vitamin D in the winter if you live more then 37 degrees above the equator.

That would be the majority of the US for those of you playing along at home.

You don't just need Vitamin D during the summer.

Also it has to be between the hours of ten and three, even in the summer. Most of us have to be at work during that time.

Compounded LDN costs about $35 per month. As you say, the hard part, compounded or not, is getting the prescription. I’ve decided to hold off on LDN for now, because I think that vitamin D has my psoriasis under control.

And a suggestion to everyone; if you supplement vitamin D remember to also supplement vitamin K2. Vitamin K2 keeps the calcium going into your bones, not your blood vessels.
