TECH PING Looking at Camera Security for my House. Seems Expensive. Your expreiences?

I am planning to install an around the house night vision camera system. Hardwired. My electrician can run the negligible additional wiring needed. I would like it to record to an on site recorder. I would like it to alert us when people arrive and allow us to look through phone or tablet. I would like to be able to move it to internet surveillance when we are off the property.

Is this doable?

I see systems prices all over the map.

At what sort of cost

Who could do it? An electrician?

I have had big deal national alarm company in and they want to put in systems for nothing but have me pay for monthly monitoring. I don't want that. I want at this time just to be able to see who arrives and leaves and have it recorded.

Your experiences and advice would be appreciated.

1. Low voltage wiring techs (like those who work for alarm companies are better than electricians at running the wiring needed, period. I was a class III electrician and I had a tech wire my house. He used tricks and methods to place and install wiring and sensors an electrician just wouldn’t/couldn’t do.

I’d place an ad in the local help wanted section of the paper to find one (who probably already works for an alarm company or contracts to them).

Why wired? I just didn’t want to go around swapping out batteries everywhere periodically. Or depend completely on home wifi for interconnection.

2. Security? To an extent but many times they’re just an after-the-fact evidentiary source. My ‘final security’ uses magazines instead of batteries and wires.

I use Ring. Have a cam for each entryway. Contemplating a 4th for a blind spot of the house. Solar battery charging extra.

Peace of mind when I can turn the cams on live if I suspect something, or save a recording if need be.

Low voltage wiring tech/experience. Experienced with existing finished installations (i.e., not new construction) for alarm/security purposes.

You can hook them to existing doorbell wires. But if you’re looking to add wiring, yeah you’re probably best leaving it to a pro to ensure the proper voltage, etc.

I agree. My Blink systems have been running for over two years with no problems. I run one at our primary residence and another at our home 2000 miles away, with both indoor and outdoor cameras. Alerts me when anything moves in my motion zones, and I can immediately watch the recorded footage or go to live monitoring. Great system and very cheap. I run the remote system through a cellular hotspot, so we don’t even have traditional internet there.

I’ve had SimpliSafe for about 4 years. Easy setup, reliable, and affordable.

I have a GW System. I found out after buying it that GW stands for Great Wall so guess where it comes from? The first one of their systems I bought worked very well. The second one I’m not real thrilled with. My system uses the old one power line and one coax for each camera. The new systems use the newer systems use PoE (Power over Ethernet} cameras. Not sure which is better but the PoE camera only needs one line ran to it.

I got Simply Safe system. 8 Door and window sensors, two indoor censored cameras and one out door camera. All the cameras have microphones if you want to hear what’s going on.

The indoor cameras are pugged into a wall outlet, the out door camera has a rechargeable batt that last 4 months before you need to plug it in.

I don’t pay for monitoring because I am a home body. But when I travel I activate the system and it will send me a notification if it is activated. Then I can monitor the cameras and determine if an LEO response is needed.

I would assess the quality on the WIFY video as low. But its good enough to see if you have a problem. I think they must use these same cameras for all the UFO videos we see.

Very easy to install and no wiring needed. I payed under $400 for the system. Hope I was of assistance.

Don’t use wires!

That’s so 2000s.

It’s 2023. plenty of WireLESS options available for security camera. Mine uses wireless encryption (WPA2).
