Mexican beer Modelo Especial recently dethroned Bud Light as the top-selling beer brand in the U.S., with the growing Hispanic drinking age population and an increased trend toward premiumization as main causes, according to a top analyst.
"Everybody kind of figured Bud Light was getting hit by that boycott so that fell out of number one. If I told you that the new top-selling brand is Mexican, you might be surprised. If I told you it's Mexican and not Corona … who would've thought Modelo Especial?" Barron's associate editor Jack Hough said during an appearance on Fox Business's "Barron's Roundtable."
Following the Dylan Mulvaney controversy, wherein the beer brand took on significant backlash after featuring the transgender activist, Bud Light's sales have continued to take a dip, so much so that the brand has recently fallen from the spotlight as the #1 Selling Beer Brand on a dollar basis in the U.S.

Nope! No way. I've been to Italy lots of times, but I don't go to Italy expecting better food than in the US.
“Modelos ads are more macho.”
Si! Es verdad.
I actually heart their ads A LOT. And I pick up on all the code language. Many are very Hispanic Pride, but not all. But all ARE about Pride, but the pride of accomplishment. Not the pride in being a super weirdo.
Plus, it is a very good beer, esp. for Bud/Bud light drinkers I think. Because I’ve been a Bud drinker my entire life (except the past couple of months) and I like Modelo muy mucho.
But, I want my regular beer to be American made and am finding myself super happy with Pabst Blue Ribbon. I could say: tasts great, less filling, but that slogan is already taken by I forget who. And it is less expensive.
Corona is also licensed to Constellation Brands in the US, so buying Corona or Modelo does not enrich AB Inbev..
De gustibus of course. Two words - tomatoes and cheese.
Last chart I saw had a bump that was returning to “normal”
I much prefer Modelo to Corona. Any beer that you need to put a wedge of fruit into in order to drink it is crap.
I used to kinda like Busch, but I’m sticking with my local craft brews. Even though I have to drive 65 miles to get to the nearest brewpub now.
Hmmm. I’ll have to try Modelo now.
I never cared for Modelo Especial, but Boy Howdy, I do like a bottle or three of Modelo Negra with Mexican food.
When I drink beer I like Samuel Adams' Boston Lager.
I rather liked Swan Lager too when I went to Australia.
No light beer. Full flavor or nothing.
That should spark your memory.
Unless you have access to weekly sales you aren’t going to see that. The last monthly sales report was for May, reported about a week ago. The next is going to come in sometime in July.
The beer is pretty hood. I like the Negra. It’s a German dark beer really. For mass production beer I like it.
Yeah me too. Modelo Negra. I’m off alcohol. Doctors orders.
Right! Miller Light!
I don’t drink light beer either, but if I had to pick one, I’d say Corona is by far the best light beer. Coors is not terrible either, with Coors I actually prefer their light beer.
Had some of that Brahma when our ship pulled into Rio (actually anchored off and took liberty boats in). Pretty tasty beer with a nice finish. A decent pale lager. To be honest, I was more interested in the girls I was drinking with than the beer.
“What time is it? Its Modelo time!”
This is one of those absurdist surreal Kafka things. We can’t boycott a beer that we can’t drink in the first place.
I was on a business trip in Naples in 1992. At dinner time, I had the option of walking a couple miles to the Naval Support Activity to get some common American food or figuring out how to eat the way the local Italians do. The local restaurants publish the meal being served that evening. You like it or find another place serving something you like. Too much random hit or miss for my liking, so I took the long walk and ate typical US food. I almost had a big "oops" at the guard shack. When my ITO (orders) were cut for the trip, the travel office put the wrong middle initial on my paperwork...didn't match my passport. On return to San Diego, I learned that there was another person by my name working in building D with the middle initial D. I worked in Building C and my middle initial is C. The screw-up by the travel office was better understood at that point.
My trip to Rome in 2005 was more friendly in the food department. Plenty of variety and easy to find something that hits the spot. The gelato places were very nice.
It’s not a surprise at all. Last summer I was in LA area and I went to a discount grocery store. There was a beer cooler case a full aisle long stacked with Modelo 12 packs of glass bottles. The local Hispanic people were carrying them out the door two at a time. And paying for them, I might add.
I like Especial, but I love Negro.
