Weekly Garden Thread - June 10-16, 2023 [Garden Trends for 2023 Edition]
June 10, 2023 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 06/10/2023 5:55:13 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Interesting...but as a child my mom scared us so much that I would never try either...even as an adult.

Understandable.

I had a shelter made from camper shell for my goats.

They’d rather get on TOP of it than under it!

You can get used 55 gal plastic drums for about $20. Just have to make sure it had food stuff in them. One of the bungs will have 3/4" pipe thread in it and a spigot will thread right in.

What is the shut off valve with the nut inside the tank called? I found any such expensive. Looking for cheap plastic ones. I make a water run every 2-3 weeks in the warmer months. Low flow shower head with a shut of valve at the head like an RV shower has. Get wet, turn off water, soap up, scrub, turn on water, rinse. Same with hair/head. About 7 gallons. We use a composting toilet. I've learned how to do dishes with minimal water use. We don't drink it or cook with it.

May I assume the wife is accepting of that well?!

 That is a classic.

It's at least a 1 1/2 ton.

At least.

Has 12 leafs in the main leaf springs and another 7 for the overload springs and has a two speed rear end.

Drove a 12 ton with a split axe. Helpful, thank God.

I could fit four of the 275 gal IBC tanks but a single big round tank would be better.

275x4x9=9900 lbs.

About half this little garden is rocky.

Not in NE!

Thanks for the education.

One of my friends, another avid gardener, grows them every year. She swears by them. She likes the red ones, so look for those if you like the green ones once you’ve tried them. :)

Those work if they’re in an enclosed area - otherwise they are just a Bunny Buffet! Ask me how I know, LOL!

SO many useful things to make from pallets. My Nursery Manager was the handiest guy, and he was always coming up with ideas - we had a TON of pallets at the Garden Center, for sure.

Got all the watering done today - it really DID take. all. day!

Just got the dogs and other critters fed and the puppy is down for a nap - a young dog who is staying here for some training completely wears her out - and she turns into a Velociraptor when she’s over-tired and hungry! ‘Tony’ is going to have LIMITED playtime with her - she just can’t take all the excitement at only 11 weeks.

I’ll post pictures of puppy Arikara (Ah-RICK-Ah-Rah) when I get to it - my computer is being a BRAT these days!

Interesting! Luckily, we have a very deep, very full well. It survived the 2012 drought. Remember that? Ugh! That was the worst year for managing a Garden Center, for sure!

But, what a smart idea! Fog Harp:

I had a MOTHER dragging her TODDLER into the Garden Center and in her other hand was a handful of Nightshade with the red berries! Is this poisonous? Um - YES!

The kid had eaten a BUNCH of them - I mean, REALLY? They’re awfully bitter tasting! But, my sister stuck a bunch of bean seeds up her nose when she was a toddler, so who can say? ;)

Anyhow, I called Poison Control and they met her and the kid in an Ambulance in our parking lot. Never a dull moment! (We also had a woman suffer a major heart attack at our front door! Yikes! NOT on the same day though, LOL!)

Scary, to say the least. The kid was OK, but probably didn’t like that dose of Ipecac Syrup. ;)

Howdy! I added a David Austin rose to my garden this week. Purchased at The Bruce Company in Middleton. Variety is Olivia (hardy to zone 4) a soft pink with a lot of petals per bloom and a strong sweet fragrance. My first David Austin rose. The official pot that rose was sold in is very fancy! Kind of a royal looking crest in gold and a green thick plastic pot in a square shape. I will plant something pretty in that pot.

😄

“Bunny Buffet”

Deer buffet, too. Our hosta munching doe was just in the back yard around 8:30, eating apples off the old tree. Mom has hostas around that tree, but they were covered with row cover which she puts on every night & takes off every morning.

The pallets make the rows so neat looking - I like neat.

A relative has a new Australian Shepherd pup. We saw her Friday a week ago & they had just gotten her the Tuesday before - 12 weeks old. She is the sweetest dog & will be a wonderful farm dog. Since everything was pretty new, she was sleeping a lot between adventures, just exhausted. I got some pics today & she’s doing fine - going on walks, tagging along on chores, riding in the PU & ATV 4 wheeler. One of the 2 barn cats showed her who was boss day 1 so she gives that cat a wide berth - pretty funny watching them sidling around each other.

I think I caught the rascal who has been munching on my peppers this evening. There’s a ‘back way’ into the garden & that’s where he was.

All my plants are watered - will check in 3-4 days, but hoping with the deep watering they got, they can make it a week.

You are reminding me of my daughter when she was young and ate some berries off of a bush in our starter home front yard. I don’t even remember what they were, but yes, I had to call poison control for that incident. I was worried that Children’s Services were going to come for a visit. It was the second time that I had called Poison Control. Both times I had to make her throw up.

I’m fortunate. No authorities ever visited. She is getting married 3 weeks from today. Destination wedding for everyone but the two of them. Heading to the mountains in Oregon. Planning is coming down to the nitty gritty, so I will probably be posting less the next few weeks.

Today I took a shot at decent weather to get a few more things planted, all flowers. It took me a while to find impatiens this year, but I eventually did, and now they are in a cart by our fire pit, just in time for lightning bug season. Yay! One of my favorite times of the year! On a clear night, it looks like the stars are falling out of the sky, twinkling all the way down! It’s just beautiful to watch the fireflies moving through the woods. Almost magical!

That is SO funny! My male cat, Boyd, REFUSES to give up entry and exit from the kitchen door. I’ve raised a LOT of puppies on that porch, and it’s same-old-same-old. He and Arikara have been doing that same ‘slide by’ all week, LOL!

Eva Grace - who is more practical and less full of EGO than Boyd - will go in and out the back patio door to avoid the puppy. ;)

Congratulations on the pending wedding! Life. Goes. On. :)

“...lightning bug season. Yay! One of my favorite times of the year!”

I love them, too. With our drought, it’s going to be tough sledding for them. :(

I have been IN LOVE with this song since the moment I first hear it. ‘Owl City, Fireflies’
