Indy 500 fans SLAM Jewel for 'extremely disrespectful' rendition of the national anthem ahead of historic race... as viewers claim she 'ruined' moment with her twist on the classic

Fans at the Indianapolis 500 may have thought singer-songwriter Jewel's version of the national anthem was a little tone deaf.

Instead of doing a by-the-book rendition of 'The Star-Spangled Banner', the Alaska-raised Folk artist, 49, put together a more nuanced version of the anthem.

On a stage as big as 'The Greatest Spectacle in Racing', the four-time Grammy-nominated artist put together a soulful version of the 200+ year-old song.

It was similar in style and tone to the national anthem she sang at the 2023 NBA All-Star Game in Utah, where she was born.

While it wasn't a complete departure from the notes as other versions had, nor was it a horribly sung version, some on social media objected to this rendition of the song.

She accessorized the look with a beige cowboy hat.

Jewel wore her strawberry toned tresses cascading down her shoulders in light curls.

She strummed on her dark green guitar and rearranged the entire song for a much slower and soulful rendition.

On Twitter, the version of the anthem sung generated a lot of reactions - with the general consensus being mixed.

That being said, there were plenty of Twitter users upset at the sound of the song.

She has one style that is original to her and it’s all she knows.

It’s another person with the “’ME...ME...ME...Look at me!” agenda. The anthem meant nothing to her, and it’s obvious

. . and another evidence of the enemy's efforts to erase American identification.

Of all the insidious ways in which the enemy attempts to destroy us, the general concept of erasing us from the face of the earth, the attack on everything familiar for something "new" is the worst.

It's already happened to and in our churches.

Just once before I die, I’d like to hear the national anthem sung at a public event exactly as it was written, without any “interpretation” such as yodeling the last line. I don’t expect to, though.

I liked it too.
I thought it was very sincere.

Everyone's taste in music is different but for me, Whitney Houston's version from the 1991 Super Bowl is perfection. Goose bumps every time I hear it.

Best rendition I ever heard was Donna Summer at the 1991 MLB All-Star game at Fenway Park.

Jaw-dropping.

And the first post on FR is I liked it… it’s time to purge FR or leave it.
The national anthem… change it and put it on your personal album, but not a public singing that is to honor America… it’s the same people who think this is the first day of summer and head to the lake to um… honor the fallen.

Only the first verse is ever sung. The fourth never.

I guess it wasn’t as bad as it could have been, so there’s that.

I think I’m less bothered by her interpretation as I am by the trend that everything must be “reinterpreted” for “modern audiences”. We no longer seem to have room for tradition and I suspect it’s intentional in order to sever us from our collective past so it can be recast as necessary. Those who control the past...

I’m sure thinking that makes me racist or sexist, or at least curmudgeonly. But I’m past the point where I care.

Find a copy of Larry Ford’s rendition of the Star Spangled Banner and you will be blown away. He sings it like it is suppose to be sung and it is glorious!

The National Anthem is best sung corporately, respectfully, and with no frills.
