A California man suing Powerball winner Edwin Castro over a $2 billion winning ticket claims he was blackmailed and falsely told the ducat “was a loser.”
In court papers, Jose Rivera argues he’s the rightful owner of the $2.04 billion jackpot, buying the winning ticket Nov. 7, 2022 — a day before the drawing — from Joe’s Service Station in Altadena.
But a man identified as “Reggie,” Urachi F. Romero, allegedly “stole” the ticket and “refused” to return it despite Rivera’s requests, the complaint states.
Rivera said he repeatedly asked “Reggie” to hand over the ticket once the winning numbers were revealed.
Instead, “Reggie” told Rivera “the ticket was a loser” and “if I find the ticket we can split the winnings 50/50,” the suit states.

The guy doesn't have a case.
Lottery tickets are bearer instruments.
The whole case may hinge on skin color.
They could have a camera from when they bought the ticket. He also could have purchased something with a card. The ticket can be traced back to where and when it was purchased. If Edwin Castro can be proven to have been somewhere else, and not there, that is pretty strong evidence.
They have a camera at the store that will show who bought the ticket... Sadly, they all look similar so figuring it out will be difficult.
Unless he has video evidence of being told it was a losing ticket...he’s outta luck. “He said, she said”.

^^This^^ was my understanding too. But how did this suit proceed? It’s got to be thrown out!,?.
Imagine buying someone a lotto ticket as a cheap gift, and they win two billion dollars. Now that would be awkward!
Why? If I gifted someone a ticket and they won, I would be happy for them. Anybody having any honor would.
Cash only for lotto here. Illegal to use a credit card. Not enough profit for the fees anyway
Is he getting his 50%?
Yeah. I hope the guy got his lawyer on a contingency basis.
Possible video of the purchase.
Gonna need video or it didn’t happen.
Right, I understand, but he could have bought gas or something with a card.
They have the time and date and place when the ticket was sold. In my district, that is one of the questions I must answer when I claim a win.
