A California father died after being struck by a car Thursday night while helping a family of ducks cross a busy road, witnesses said.
The horrifying crash took place at Stanford Ranch Road and Park Drive in the city of Rocklin, about 22 miles from Sacramento, just after 8 p.m.
William Wimsatt, a 12-year-old boy who witnessed the kindhearted stranger’s actions, told KCRA 3 the man had stepped out of his car to help the ducks avoid traffic. “He got out of the car and was shooing the ducks and everyone was clapping because he was being really nice,” William said.

Some ducks are more vicious than others.
Texting or putting make up on?
Aw, that is heartbreaking!
Sending up a prayer for that man’s loved ones and for those who witnessed this horribly sad occurrence.
That kind man is in the Lord’s arms now.
Sometimes animals block traffic, and a driver tries to help by getting the animal(s) out of the way. Once, we saw a driver hop out to move a very large, slow turtle out of traffic. Another time, two of us pulled over to chase little puppies out of the street. I’m guessing this man was doing the same thing.
Reminds me of a few local stories about people who were hit and killed while helping stranded drivers. Good Samaritans, just trying to do the right thing.
Sad, but still a Darwin award winner. He is clearly walking against a no walking sign, and very possibly a red light.
If he was rushing to pull a toddler out of the street = hero.
Saving ducklings, no. Just stupid.
Good one - that was the guy’s problem: they were street ducks and he forgot his shotgun.
From what I understand the man was shooing the ducks to the curb and then suddenly pivoted to dart out in front of the girl who thought he was going the other way.
A very tragic accident.
I join in your prayers.
Folly:
Noun 1 lack of good sense, understanding, or foresight
3 A costly undertaking having an absurd or ruinous outcome
There was a high school girl years ago that stop her car to “save” a dog that had been hit. She was hit and killed. Really broke my heart. People need to know they can get killed doing dumb stuff.
Whoever put the perps in the memorial is a bit demented.
Trooper shuts down interstate traffic to facilitate ducks crossing highway.
Akin to early episodes of “Animal Rescue” on the History channel. Animal control officers weaving in and out of traffic, sirens blaring, to arrest a woman with 30 cats.
And I refer again to Situational Awareness.
When "playing in traffic", one must be hyper-aware of what the cars are doing. One must also be predictable. Remember: Gross Tonnage has right-of-way.
When driving, ALWAYS be alert for unconventional activities ahead. Approaching them slowly gives the driver more time to react, and possibly avoid having to "cooperate with authorities".
I read a disgusting article this morning about the idiot who killed the bride was observed crying and mumbling “now my life is ruined.” The Me, Me, Me generation strikes again!!!
“That kind man is in the Lord’s arms now.”

Allegra, what he did was a nice gesture, but so we’re clear: NO ONE is saved by good works.
Isaiah 64:6
... all our righteous acts are like filthy rags
“ Whoever put the perps in the memorial is a bit demented.”
Peeps?
Forget it Gundog, it’s Calipornia. Things roll a bit different out there!
Indeed. That is a major and broad residential intersection about 5 miles from here. Tons of open space, parks, creeks, etc in the immediate area. Turkeys, geese, ducks, etc on the roadway all the time. Lots of pedestrians, cyclists and runners. Unfortunately, Rocklin High School is one block south. Teenagers aren’t known for situational awareness being their long suite
When around traffic, always assume the drivers are distracted, high, or incompetent. Do not trust them. A crosswalk provides no protection.
It is shocking to see how many people cross a street without looking.
Condolences to this man’s family and friends.
OODA loop not in use.
RIP kind soul and may your family find peace through this.
