In a country where many people have to pay for their medication, the method of healing infected flesh wounds with fly larvae also promises to lower medical bills.

"The results were good; patients who were to stay here for three months and go through surgery while using expensive antibiotics were able to leave hospital in two to three weeks," says Dr Christopher Kibiwot, who took part in the trial at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

But with the discovery of penicillin and the development of antibiotics in the 20th Century, modern medicine dropped it as the treatment of choice in hospitals. With resistance to antibiotics now a growing challenge, doctors are looking at alternatives.

Some hospitals in the U.S. do use this, but mostly we don't get cutting edge treatment like this, because it doesn't make people enough money.

Yep. Pharmacy grade maggots are a few hundred buck and work pretty darn good. Especially on gangrenous wounds. But treating them with $4000 doses of the latest wonder drug makes everyone more money.

Maggots were used in ancient times to clean up wounds.

These “studies” have been going on for many centuries. The Vietnamese army used the technique in that war and the US military did it, too. It is a New Thing every generation.

To be fair to Big Med, and it pains me to do it, don’t think docs will find too many patients willing to go the maggot route if a pill they can pop is available...

This is an old treatment. Wood maggots are used and grown for this purpose. They will only eat necrotic tissue. These aren’t the maggots you find in your garbage can in the summer.

I knew a WWII vet who had extensive bone damage done by a Nazi mortar round. All the debris in his wounds caused osteomyelitis (a bone infection) and he would have lost his arm except they used (pharmaceutical grade?) maggots to eat all the rotting flesh, including the necrotized bone marrow.
