McDonald’s Franchises in Kentucky Forced 10-Year-Olds to Work Until 2 a.m. — Without Pay

The US government slapped three McDonald’s franchises in Kentucky with more than $200,000 in fines after an investigation found they employed minors, including a 10-year-old who was illegally made to work until 2 a.m. and who was allowed to operate a deep fryer — all without getting paid.

A franchise in Louisville employed two 10-year-old workers who were among some two dozen minors under the age of 16 to work across 10 McDonald’s locations owned by Louisville-based Bauer Food LLC, it was alleged.

The minors were tasked with preparing and distributing food orders, cleaning the store, manning the drive-thru windows, operating a register, and manning the deep fryer, which is only permitted for employees over the age of 16, according to a statement by the US Department of Labor. “Investigators also determined two 10-year-old children were employed – but not paid – and sometimes worked as late as 2 a.m.,” according to the feds.

This is deceptive propaganda. There is not one thing wrong or illegal about family owned apprenticeships. Keeps them off the streets and despite what this says, they do indeed get compensated as a partner in the business. They are just pissed they didn’t get their payroll income taxes so they are trying to paint this as wrong when it is not.

Yeah, article has the smell of narrative that leaves off relevant parts of the real story.

Yes, just as I, too, suspected:

“...In a statement, Bauer Food LLC said the two 10-year-olds allegedly employed were children of a night manager who were visiting their parent at work and were not approved by franchisee organization management to be in that part of the restaurant.”

Probably the kids are a couple of the 85,000 missing illegal immigrant children. Are they employees of the franchisee or of some third party provider of workers, such that the franchisee can say they never knew the workers’ actual ages?

Was operating machinery (cutters/threaders/etc) and driving a forklift and bobtail at 14 but they thought I was much older and never verified my information

That’s a good way to lose your franchise license.

If it was the owners kids, that should be allowed. It’s a family business, after all.

No, not sarcasm.

I remember sweeping hair at my aunt and uncle’s barber shop when I was 9/10...

“Under no circumstances should there ever be a 10-year-old child working in a fast-food kitchen around hot grills, ovens and deep fryers,” Wage and Hour Division District Director Karen Garnett-Civils said.”

Shoot, but 10 years old I could cook pork chops, meat loaf, hamburgers, etc. in my family kitchen. Wasn’t around a deep fryer, but a cast iron skillet quarter/half filled with oil ain’t much different. Of course, that was 1980, and we were the ‘latch key’ kids, aka Gen X.

There was just such a story about a minor working in a meat packing plant. Horrible tale. Upon further review, the ‘minor’ turned out to be an adult.

How do you get a kid to work without pay? Or even clean his room?

You teach them from the time they are young that doing a job is part of being a responsible human.

Last summer Oldest Daughter (11) along with her partner in crime the neighbor girl (14) raised a garden and sold vegetables all summer long.

They had help of course from Oldest Son and dog and Dad was always in ear shot to help if they needed it. But they did quite well at it.

Youngest Daughter helps me out often and Youngest Son spent any number of hours helping me and his Dad preserve food for the winter.

Hmm...it’s the same franchisee though.

I’m thinking there are single mothers working there and they have no one to watch their kids.
