Weekly Garden Thread - April 29-May 5, 2023 [Why Plants Love Rainwater the Best Edition]
April 29, 2023 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 04/29/2023 7:01:57 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

I think you could do it if you started in a pot in January and moved it outside. I will say that it grows like a Ti plant, straight up, and has a great smell!

I grew it one year, but it did not grow to be large. I think I needed more heat and summer or I started it late. I was not impressed and decided I was better off getting it at the local Indian Grocery store or Oriental market. (Not a plant that does well in this or your growing region.)

Just for kicks, here is a link to a commodity market for Ginger in India! INR indian Rupee I believe!

That’s Pops on the tractor. He made the first few rounds while I stayed on the ground to scrape the plow. Once it was shined up a bit I took over and finished up.

Well, we called it soda. Whatever you called it would be a mess spilled in your Kaaa.

"Pepsi, Pepsi no coke!" Billy Goats tavern on lower Michigan Avenue. I lived in Chicago for a couple of years about 6 or 7 blocks from the place in a $90 a month. I could get burger and fries and a Beer there for about $4.75.

Well, he looks like he is having fun!

Something old farmers used to do with their plow was to use copper in the tip (point). It would wear off pretty quickly, but they did this because they believed the scowered off copper prevented problems with fungus in their fields!

Glad you landed safely! I’ve made that flight twice, and it’s a long one!

Your own lime tree - learn to make a solid Mojito, and share the recipe with us, LOL!

Key Lime Pie? Lime Pound Cake? A slice of lime in everything you drink? Possibilities are endless!

Will you have problems with monkeys stealing your bananas? ;)

Gardening Tip. I found the pieces I needed for this set-up at Dollar Tree. Works like a champ on salad greens.

May Nature Walk around my farm:

Hickory Tree bloom...

If I were a Fairy, I would TOTALLY live here...yellow woodland violets, and soft moss for my bed. 🙂

Huge patch of May Apples (umbrella-looking plants) on either side of a path that the cows (and deer!) take up the hill. 'Podophyllum peltatum.'

Lovely mushrooms on a dead tree log with wild Black Cap Raspberry canes.

Apple Blossom Time!

No Morels, yet - still a little chilly and DRY. Hoping for rain this week, as the temps warm up.

Found this potted at the Walmart Garden Center, yesterday. Rainbow Candy Crush Kale. Edible and beautiful. I'm using it as a centerpiece in one of my porch pots.

I went and looked and seed is available through Jung's and Gurney's, Harris Seed and Superseeds. I did not know this was a 'thing' and I love to play Candy Crush. ;)

My brother picked spinach and kale last night - had put them in the pan to steam when he said “hmmm, maybe I should wash this off first!” Yeah, good idea! I’ve passed on this tip to my family, most of whom have gardens.

It has been very cool the last week, with overnight temps mid 40’s mostly, some lower 40’s ... tomorrow night should be around 42. The ‘cold’ weather crops like kale/spinach are loving it .... the ‘maters, not so much. Once we hit next week, it should start warming up ... temps 50’s, rising to 60’s overnight. Temps should go from low/mid 60’s during the day (we’ve had lots of breeze/wind, too so feeling ‘chilly’) to the 80’s. The tomatoes/peppers are just ‘hanging out’, hopefully getting adjusted to being out of the pots and in the ground - we had 3” of rain a couple of days ago, so there’s plenty of moisture. Fingers crossed when the warmer temps arrive, the plants will take off & start growing.

I did re-seed my Divas the other day .... when I scratched up the ground where I planted seeds earlier, there was nothing there, so the seeds never germinated. The Dragon Eggs came right up. Still waiting for 2 of my dahlias to come to the surface ... the 3 that I see are growing fast and I’m getting nervous about the 2 I don’t see yet ... one of them is the first root I bought and the one dahlia I want the most!

I have the bottom red one only ours is green. We’ve gotten years of use out of it, it was down at the barn for years where we would toss a flake of hay in for the goats. We have collected and dumped weeds, mixed soil, and many other uses. I also like to toss all our small plant starter pots in there and fill up with water. Quick wash. I planted carrots in a pot today and used it to mix up the soil, compost and sand. The inner basket is a good idea just not for us with two people.

Me, too!

The maroon and yellow are up, but I want ‘Orange Nugget’ the most and so far - nothing. I am resisting digging around in there to see what’s up. So far. ;)
