Study: Sugar-Sweetened Drinks Raise Risk of Premature Death for People With Type 2 Diabetes

A new study shows an increased risk of premature death for those with type 2 diabetes when sugar-sweetened drinks like soda or lemonade are consumed regularly over water or tea.

The study, published Wednesday and led by researchers at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, is the first large-scale examination of the link between beverage consumption and premature death or cardiovascular disease for those living with type 2 diabetes, despite previous studies linking beverage consumption with cardiovascular health, weight change and mortality among the general population.

"Beverages are an important component of our diet, and the quality can vary hugely," said lead author Qi Sun, associate professor in the Departments of Nutrition and Epidemiology.

"People living with diabetes may especially benefit from drinking healthy beverages -- but data has been sparse," Sun said. "These findings help fill in that knowledge gap and may inform patients and their caregivers on diet and diabetes management."

During the study, researchers analyzed more than 18 years of health data from 9,252 women and 3,519 men, who had all been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The participants reported every few years on what beverages they consumed daily. Sugar-sweetened beverages included sodas, fruit punch and lemonade. Artificially sweetened beverages included juice, coffee, tea, low-fat cow's milk, full-fat cow's milk and plain water.

With each additional daily serving of a sugary drink, there was an 8% increase in all-cause mortality, researchers said. That number decreased for those who consumed healthier beverages regularly.

The number dropped by 18% for all-cause mortality and 20% for cardiovascular disease when those diagnosed with type 2 diabetes replaced one drink a day with coffee. The risk of premature death dropped by 16% for tea and water.

"People living with diabetes should be picky about how they keep themselves hydrated," said Sun.

"Switching from sugar-sweetened beverages to healthier beverages will bring health benefits."

55 grams in a half-liter bottle of Dr Pepper.

RDA for an adult male is 38 grams... (which is crazy when you add up how much sugar is in the food you eat daily)

It might be because these consumers are also more prone to eat a whole bag of potato chips or other unhealthy things that require more moderation.

I quit regularly consuming large amounts of sugar about a year ago, and save for holiday indulgence and a once in a while 32-ounce Coke from the neighborhood convenience store, I am feeling much better and took about 20 points off my systolic blood pressure. I don’t want the government to start banning sugary stuff, but I think it’s a wise choice to reduce sugar if you want to be healthier and feel better.

“WTF doesn’t know this already.”

And most of the diabetics do to. However the entry also said:

“sugar-sweetened drinks like soda or lemonade are consumed regularly over water or tea.”

Somehow I’m not real impressed with their choice of sugar replacement using drinks that contain caffeine. Caffeine, like in tea, causes a short-term decrease in insulin sensitivity (or an increase in insulin resistance). Caffeine intake can inhibit the body’s ability to regulate blood glucose levels, impairing the effectiveness of insulin and exacerbating diabetes. So the recommendation of caffeine containing drinks as a mainstay is not real bright.

Sugar spikes can be partly tolerated and semi controlled with insulin. The major thing that can control insulin resistance is exercise. However there are many that are unable to exercise and they can be a target for the problem.

Weight loss can also cut down on insulin resistance. No single diet has been proved to be the most effective. Some evidence suggests, though, that eating foods that are low in fat and high in carbohydrates can worsen insulin resistance. So much for high carb, low fat diets.

Insulin resistance is a major player in diabetic’s problems. There are no medications specifically approved to treat insulin resistance. Yet diabetes medications like metformin and thiazolidinediones, or TZDs, are insulin sensitizers that lower blood glucose, at least in part, by reducing insulin resistance. But that is more like a brief putting out a fire that quickly regains its strength and advances the side effects of diabetes: heart failure due to artery and heart hardening, the inability to move fluids in the body causing asthma, and other parts failures throughout the body as moisture literally downs the organs. And the advancement of diabetes, which cannot be stopped, worsens the problems.

“Plant-based diets show very good effects on blood sugar, heart issues, and hypertension.”

Plant based diets, or vegan as such, are low in both fats and carbs, thus no real fuel is getting into your body. If you are also going to use exercise, which every diet I’ve ever seen includes, there will be no fuel for your muscles to utilize especially with the body’s use of lactic acid as your muscles get over obligated.

I had a doctor that went on one of these diets, and he normally ran a two and a half mile run for lunch every day. As the lack of immediate fuel started getting lower and lower with stored fats, he wasn’t able to continue with this diet as it slowly ceased his ability to employ this type of diet and still accomplish his exercise needs.

It’s one of the interesting problems with diabetes in it has so many puzzle pieces it also has so many ways to create problems to control it. And everyday is different for the body needs. Wish it was easier to come up with a formula that can match all the directions it can go. Thank you for the entry.

Fructose is sneaky. Unlike glucose, which can be used by almost any cell in the body, it can only be processed by the liver.

I drink water and I drink black, unsweetened coffee. That’s it. My father worked 30 years in the soft drink industry and he wouldn’t drink it either.

HFCS is the same as sucrose when it comes to metabolism.

- - - - - - -

HFCS has free fructose, not just fructose in sucrose, and the body absorbs free fructose faster. That is more fattening.

People use fermentation to make HFCS. There are probably bacteria fragments, which cause allergic reactions in some people.

Have to disagree. There's plenty of fat in avocados, olives, nuts, and plenty of carbs in pasta, starch vegetables, rice, bread, grains, beans.

People have to be smart about going plant based. It's not simply stopping eating animal products. You have to get educated and be smart about it.

“You have to get educated and be smart about it.”

It is a compromise in both directions. Compared to the standard American diet of highly processed, low-fiber, high-calorie, sugary foods, vegan diets have health advantages. However, researchers found that avoiding all animal foods may lead to nutritional deficiencies in vitamin B12, omega-3, calcium, zinc, iron, magnesium, and high-quality protein.

These deficiencies may be associated with increased risk for certain types of cancer, stroke, bone fractures, preterm birth, and failure to thrive. Avoiding consumption of animal-sourced food may also be related to higher rates of depression and anxiety. Hair loss, weak bones, muscle wasting, skin rashes, hypothyroidism, and anemia are other issues that have been observed in those strictly following a vegan diet.

I mentioned the doctor that was having problems with muscle use. And he attributed it to basic and first stage anemia due to dietary deficiencies. I got this from a study from the MAYO:

“Anemia is a condition in which you lack enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen to your body’s tissues. Having anemia, also referred to as low hemoglobin, can make you feel tired and weak.

Treatments for anemia, which depend on the cause, range from taking supplements to having medical procedures. You might be able to prevent some types of anemia by eating a healthy, varied diet.”

Anemia signs and symptoms vary depending on the cause and severity of anemia. Depending on the causes of your anemia, you might have no symptoms.

Diet anemia:

Signs and symptoms, if they do occur, might include:

Fatigue, Weakness, Pale or yellowish skin, Irregular heartbeats, Shortness of breath, Dizziness or lightheadedness, Chest pain, Cold hands and feet, and Headaches.

I believe you are of the right mind as you are taking the word diet and not trying to determine it a part time weight control device but as a lifestyle. So many people don’t do this and are not observing the act as a permanent action but only for an immediate response. I applaud you for that. But just like its counter part diets that contain more, shall we say, robust carb and calorie contents, they both have their flaws and the ones associated with vegan concern a more weakened state especially for people who are after a quick response result.

One of the more successful tools I have found for weight control under healthy conditions is the Harris Benedict Formula. You can find information on this at this site and others as it is recommended by a number of health organizations:

https://www.gatewaypsychiatric.com/calculating-calorie-needs/#:~:text=The%20Harris%20Benedict%20equation%20is,on%20total%20body%20weight%20alone.

This process leaves it open to maintain weight and fitness while controlling dietary needs based upon the consumer’s wishes and doesn’t take anything off the table. In a conversation with Karen Hughes a number of years ago while she was the head of education for Cooper Institute, she recommended going no more than 500 calories off the weight maintaining level of calorie intake for dietary purposes. It is used by the US military for their weight and fitness needs. This geared with nutritional standards and exercise is a mainstay for the recognition of BMR to begin the conditioning process. Stay healthy.

“recommended going no more than 500 calories off the weight maintaining level of calorie intake for dietary purposes”

This doesn’t make any sense, from the standpoint that fasting is a perfectly healthy and acceptable method of burning fat, and has other health benefits as well.

As a practical matter, the number of calories needed to simply maintain a given weight is (for most people) surprisingly low, and the subtraction of 500 calories from that figure would still put it in line with weight loss calorie recommendations going back almost a century.

600-800 calories for rapid weight loss, maybe 900-1100 for moderate rate weight loss.

BMR stands for basal metabolic rate. It is the minimum number of calories that your body needs for basal functions like breathing, digesting, and keeping the body temperature steady over a day.

Counting your BMR can be a good starting point if you want to lose weight. First, it tells you how many calories your body needs to function properly, so you never want to eat less than that. Then, if you multiply it by your physical activity level (PAL), you know how many calories you actually burn each day. Subtracting a reasonable number of calories (e.g., 500 kcal/day) will let you lose weight gradually and steadily.

One of the advantages of the Harris Benedict Formula is that it gives you an estimated amount of calorie intake based upon your activity level to maintain weight.

https://www.omnicalculator.com/health/bmr-harris-benedict-equation

In general, if you cut about 500 calories a day from your usual diet, you may lose about ½ to 1 pound a week. But this can vary depending on your body, how much weight you want to lose, your gender and activity level.

It sounds simple. But it’s more difficult because when you lose weight, you usually lose a mix of fat, lean tissue and water. Also, because of changes that occur in the body as a cause of weight loss, you may need to decrease calories more to keep losing weight.

https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/weight-loss/in-depth/calories/art-20048065#:~:text=In%20general%2C%20if%20you%20cut,It%20sounds%20simple.

The body will protect itself even from dietary changes. A person generally wishes to lose weight because they, or someone else, noticed they have gained too much. This can include anything from appearance to physical needs. But when the body realizes it is being underfed from the norm, it will in time start to horde calories making harder to maintain a steady weight loss. This will cause a greater amount of calorie cut to continue the consistent reduction in weight. And the more calories that are removed from the diet, it will cut that safe and consistent loss. Remember my doctor friend? He found out the hard way on extreme calorie cut diets that his energy and strength level dissipated to the point of muscle failure because his expectation of loss were to great and too quick.

Excess weight, whether it exists or not, didn’t get there overnight, it won’t come off overnight either. At least not safely and still maintain a comfortable lifestyle without cravings and setbacks not to mention the violating of your DNA determination of body shape and size.

Severely restricting your calories can decrease your metabolism and cause you to lose muscle mass. This makes it more difficult to maintain your weight loss in the long term.
